You're probably right, but I wonder if you can find out how many male dominated city councils you can find, just as another data point?

But they still govern from the left as far as the social issues including abortion, gun control and gay rights, areas where they have a lot more flexibility to appeal to their base without risking fiscal insolvency.

I'll stop when people quit posting that this is so amazing. It's not.

The Omaha (bigger than Pittsburgh) city council has 6 men and one woman.

Instead all I got was a lukewarm tidbit of data that I found to be neither exiting, groundbreaking, nor noteworthy given the fact that this is 2013 after all.

Given the anticlimactic reading experience I've just had, as well as the proverbial "in" Gnutella provided by his/her choice of wording for this thread, I felt it prudent to inject the topic of race relations into the discussion. I feel, from a current-events standpoint anyway, that if you're going to call Pittsburgh "forward thinking" and cite gender relations as an example as to why it's a "forward thinking" city, I'd counter that assertion with the topic of the city's utterly deplorable race relations. So tell me Hopes....Would you be so brave as to label the city of Pittsburgh "forward-thinking" based solely on the fact that woman are as successful in reaching public office as men, while ignoring the topic of race relations?
So how are the race relations in the backwoods of Armstrong County?

It has become more progressive albeit very slowly.

Philadelphia might not be a well oiled machine, but its suburbs have become very openminded, diverse, progressive and liberal. Pittsburgh's suburbs still identify with the 1980's Reagan demographic.

If you ever notice during the last few presidential elections that western pa doesn't really mean much anymore. All of the votes are out of philly and its surrounding suburban counties.
No place in this country is really "diverse," every metro area is generally racially segregated. In some of the upper-middle class suburbs you might find a sizable Asian population, but that's about it. You won't see many blacks or hispanics in those neighborhoods. That's the way it is New York, San Francisco, LA, and anywhere else. And "openminded" and "progressive and liberal" are two things that usually do not go together.

Gnutella should have done that before he made his opening post, since he thought Pittsburgh's situation was so unique.

Here are the cities on either side of Pittsburgh in population:

Lexington-Fayette, KY:
6 women, 8 men
http://www.lexingtonky.gov/index.aspx?page=325

Corpus Christi, TX
4 women, 4 men, woman mayor
http://www.cctexas.com/city-council/index

Sorry, I just can't find these male-dominated councils for you. I'm done.
