Just saw on my Twitter feed:
"Parking enforcement officers will not be working in Pittsburgh today, don't worry about feeding the meters!!"
https://twitter.com/SarahArbogast/st...21820433088512
I am curious to know if the meters reflect this.

Which implies that the only reason to act in a lawful manner is the threat of punishment, right?

? Not sure what you mean.

I looked at a couple of meters in Oakland and didn't see any message stating that one didn't have to pay. I'll see if I can find someone in my building who parks on the street and ask them.

With the highest parking taxes in the nation I don't think anyone should feel bad about not throwing money at them for a day.

My brain must be frozen, as I still do see what you are getting at. I posted a link from Twitter stating that parking enforcement won't be in effect today. (By the way, follow-up: Trash Pick Up, Parking Enforcement Changes Due To Extreme Cold « CBS Pittsburgh )
In light of the MLK parking thread (which seems to no longer have any answers?), I don't recall if the new meters showed that parking was free/not enforced?

Feeding a meter when you don't have to isn't integrity but rather stupidity.

Because it's too cold for the personnel to risk being outside. It doesn't necessarily follow that the legal requirement to feed the meters is also suspended.

(And I found that piece from KDKA as well, after my earlier posts: "Guy Costa, chief operations officer for the city, told KDKA’s Kym Gable. “We’ll be out there working, but I will say the parking enforcement officers will not be working tomorrow so if you come downtown you won’t have to fumble for quarters for the meters.” )

So, yeah, it seems that a city official is saying that the lack of enforcement equates to a de facto suspension of the legal requirement to feed the meters, which is all well and good.

I just thought I detected a hint of indignation in the OP if, in fact, the meters themselves might fail to reflect the one day, weather influenced, change in enforcement. Not the law--the enforcement. Kinda a "looking a gift horse in the mouth" thing.

I really don't have a dog in this fight because I honestly don't recall the last time I parked in a metered spot. I certainly haven't used the new ones. I just figured I'd post that to see whether I was the only one who saw it that way. I found it thought provoking.

Sure, but that's part of what I was hinting at. Is the "have to" part due only to the threat of the penalty?

murder would always be wrong.

not feeding a meter - well, a lot less of an impact on society at large. its nice that someone might feed it anyway, grateful for the space at all. but if someone didnt on a day like today, when enforcement wasn't in effect, that is OK. everyone should get a little break once in a while at no one else's loss.
