I lived in fairly crowded suburban and urban areas. No shooting in your backyards allowed. Although one neighborhood had a gunshot locator system. The law was not being obeyed! Sadly it was people shooting off their guns to celebrate the New Year or the 4th of July or at each other. Prior to the installation of locator system, my next door neighbor found a bullet lodged in the metal awning over his deck when he went outside on New Year's Day. Lot's of neighborhood celebrants the night before. Still had raccoons.

I live in a suburban area filled with responsible gun owners. Nobody shoots guns to celebrate holidays here. We bang pots and pans instead. I'm not a rule or law follower, Julie. Never have been. I live by my own standards, which matches most laws like don't murder, steal, etc. But I won't obey a law that prohibits shooting a damn rodent that's in my own yard. We had raccoons 15 years ago and took care of the problem swiftly. If this becomes an issue, we'll do it again.

Goodness, it is just a raccoon. What is the big deal? We even have a few in FC. I could care less.

It wasn't behaving appropriately---being out at daylight, not being afraid and appeared to be preying on my dog. It would have been a big deal if my dog had seen it. He would have been torn to shreds.

It's very likely that this raccoon is merely comfortable around humans and pets because the neighbor is feeding it, but it could be in the early stages of rabies. I'm willing to wait and see. If it can cohabitate peacefully in my neighborhood, that's fine. If it becomes a threat or a nuisance, it's not welcome.

Raccoons shouldn't be seen during the day. Call animal control if it comes back.

Your dog can't take a raccoon or at least chase it away?

The point of a crossbow is that it doesn't take that much strength to shoot. Just get somebody else to load it for you and it shouldn't be any harder to shoot than a gun.

What are you not understanding? This raccoon isn't afraid of people or dogs! It's not going to run away. And my dog is a 13 year old arthritic half blind basset hound. He'd run after it because it's interesting, not because he wants to fight it. That raccoon would scratch his eyes out or worse. You don't mess with raccoons, Curtis. They're vicious creatures. Their only natural predators are wolves and coyotes. How many of those do you have in Fox Chapel? They're big friggin' nasty mean rodents that live in people's chimneys. An infestation of rats would be better.
