Beer can most definitely go bad under several conditions. As I mentioned before hop flavor diminishes drastically after 2 months or so (a real problem with hop-forward beers). Beers sitting long can get oxidized depending on how they are stored. Any changes to a beer that can stress the yeast (high temps for example) will create off flavors. Certain styles (all sorts of lagers, and a few different ales) do not age well either. Hops can get skunked from sunlight exposure in under 2 minutes.

The beers with high ABV and high hop contents will last the longest (despite hop flavor diminishing) due to both alcohol and hops being preservatives. So yes, beer will definitely go bad because of science (not because of a marketing ploy).

That's how true, but I wonder how conservative/aggressive the breweries are when listing an expiration date.

Again, if exposed to direct sunlight or if it would re-ferment then it can certainly go bad. However, its rare that it does, especially in/from a distributor. I store cases of beer for a season, especially Troeg's Nugget Nectar and Mad Elf just to name a few and they are always better the following year. If stored properly beer rarely ever goes bad and stays the same well beyond its expiration date.

We used to go to Beaver County Beverage a ton since we are in Center... I overheard someone talking about JR's last month and we went to check it out.... WOW. We go there quite often now. Found my wife a case of Crabbies Ginger Beer there and just went over and grabbed a case of GL Oktoberfest.

Nice. I love that place. Pretty funny how Beaver County Beverage has a truck parked right by the road to turn into JR's almost since BCB opened.

Yah we laugh about that when we turn off the bridge. Only thing I hate is being tunneled from the craft area through the whole rest of the store to check out... Oh well, the selection and never having to hunt for a price tag makes up for it.
