Earlier today at a press conference regarding Senate Bill 42 and House Bill 177, which would expand Pennsylvania's hate crime law to include attacks based on sexuality and gender identity, the former bill's author, State Senator Jim Ferlo of Pittsburgh, came out as gay.

I thought this was publicly known already? I'm sure I read about this before.

I never knew it. Then again my "gaydar" is off since I always thought then-Councilman Peduto was gay before he became mayor and started dating my female upstairs neighbor.

I knew it back in the Dozen days, but he was never out out, as Whoopi might say. I found it today while reading in the Philadelphia forum about the arrests and release of names of three of the Rittenhouse gaybashers.

Pittsburgh's had prominent gay politicians for many years. James G. Fulton of Dormont served a quarter century in Congress back in the day. Ferlo is by no means unusual.

Was he "open secret" out or "quietly out" out? Elena Kagan happens to be the former.

You've said this about Fulton before, but I've never found any other source that even mentions the possibility (much less substantiates it), though that's not to say it necessarily isn't true.

Jack Anderson was a pretty prominent journalist, and reported on it when reviewing Fishbait Miller's memoirs.

One congressman who marched to a different drummer was dubbed "The Gay Caballero" by his colleagues. The late Rep. James Fulton, R-Pa., "made no effort to hide his sexual preference," swears Fishbait.
That seems to be the only source which mentions Fulton being gay. Again, I'm not necessarily saying he wasn't, but you'd think that if Fulton had a reputation like that, it would have been much wider-reported.
