Best French Baguette for the money: Breadworks in North Side near closing time. Sorry, La Gourmandine

Best Chocolate and Almond Croissants for the money: the frozen section at Trader Joe's. Sorry Jean-Marc

Best Macarons for the money: the frozen section at Trader Joe's. Sorry Gaby et Jules

Does anyone else have other Gourmet "hacks" they'd like to share? : )

Best liver Food Co-op. I prefer the plain croissants at Trader Joes and yes, they are probably the best around. A couple of odd things at Trader Joe's are the chocolate Babka and sometimes they have a Kringle that is crazy good. The best standing rib roast can be purchased from Whole Foods right before Christmas, but the price keeps going higher and higher each year and not by .50 or something. It was $9.99 and now I think it is $12.99 on sale. Agh!

Kind of a cool idea for a thread.

Have to disagree. Almond croissant isn't even in the same league. Chocolate are about comparable but frozen reproofed dough is never as good.

Five Points Artisan Bake Shop in Squirrel Hill has some great pastries also! I just finished a delicious rustic apple tart!

gg, I've been meaning to try the babka at Trader Joe's. So it is totally worthwhile?

Der Schwabe, I stand corrected. I just had an almond from La Gourmandine and I can certify it as better than the Trader Joe's frozen almond croissants. However, La Gourmandine now charges $3 1/4 dollars per almond croissant and $2 1/2 dollars for a chocolate croissant. The latter they cheap out on the chocolate whereas the Trader Joe's frozen chocolate croissants are a bit more generous.

Five Points Artisan Bake Shop, never been there before. Will have to try the rustic apple tart. I love apples even though I'm a windows guy.

Oops, I for some reason didn't see the title. I was thinking of some odd foods that are out there, that are really good. I agree the TJ's croissants are really great and I feel they are better than most of the ones in any bakery in our region. Yes, the Babka is that good.

Sorry I wanted to mention the liver at the Co-op. I also love their green goddess dressing there and I wish I knew how to make it.

What other foods are really good?

I had some hummus, tabbouleh, macaron bi toom and other Lebanese food at a church fish fry last night (Our Lady of Victory in Scott Twp). Stuff beat anything I've had at Amel's or Aladdins.

How often do they have the Lebanese food? Is it only during lent or at other times of the year as well?
