This seems pretty logical. Many stops are much too close together and people can certainly walk a block or two.

I never could understand why the bus stops on essentially every block downtown and through Oakland/Shadyside/Squirrell Hill. It seems to make the busses slower and increases traffic.

I first saw the topic and was confused because from what I could tell there's very little public transit in Pittsburgh (compared to the Netherlands, where I currently live). I have to say, though, almost every block is a bit OTT. It must make the ride much longer than is necessary.

I occasionally take the 91 to Downtown and there is definitely room for some stop consolidation. There really isn't a need for how close some of the stops are to each other.

There are way too many stops, especially in the city. I think in the short stretch of Highland Avenue between Fifth and Centre there are about 8 stops. Some of this goes back to when the trolleys plied the same routes and were later replaced by buses. There wasn't as much car traffic in the old days and most people took the trolleys, so it made sense and didn't slow things down as much as today. Another reason is that people requested stops be added because there were senior citizens who needed them closer or new apartment buildings that wanted to advertise transit service "at the door."

I hope to God that they start with the 39 Brookline. You can practically carry on a conversation with someone at the next stop because they are so close.

There is very little, yes. Next year they promise to go to combustion engines and put the horses out to pasture. Fingers crossed!

It's about time, a big no brainer. Fifth Avenue in Oakland has a stop every damn block. Slows traffic, slows he bus, and people need the exercise.

Here, here! Some of the stops on Pioneer seem like they are barely a bus length apart.

I seriously doubt 5th in Oakland will be affected. Outbound, the sidewalk is very narrow for its traffic until Atwood, so you would make the sidewalks impassable at rush hour if you removed any stops from Craft until there. After that, the spacing is pretty reasonable. Perhaps Tennyson could be removed. And outbound until Bigelow, the buses have their own lane, so they don't really affect car traffic much.

Inbound the spacing is even wider, with again possibly Tennyson as an exception.

In my neighborhood, however, the P71 could stand to lose some stops. No stop ever has more than 5 or people embarking/disembarking and there are no businesses to service. The worst example are the stops on Commercial at McClure, Blackhawk, Homestead, and Whipple.
