I'm 90% sure McKees Rocks Bottoms is not the worst part of the borough - actually it's one of the better portions. The bad areas are the projects (Myers Ridge Mixed-Income Apartments, Hays Manor, Uansa Village), along with a couple of residential areas off of Island Avenue and Chartiers Avenue.
Being that Stowe is adjacent to the Rocks I would say he would still be the man to ask about specific areas over there.

The OP's post did not seem to indicate that the proposed rental property was in the projects, but I hear you- that's certainly not the place to be.

I am agreeing with BMan that Carnegie, Crafton, and may I add Heidleberg, Bridgeville may work for the poster.

I think an important factor would be how much time she is interested in spending in the city proper. That would probably rule out certain communities that we might otherwise recommend.

OP in case you did not receive my PM. Take a look at this one:

649 Orchard Ave, Bridgeville
$975
  • 2 beds
  • 1 bath
  • 1,100 - 1,100 sq ft
  • Dogs OK
  • Newly Updated 2 BR side by side Duplex in BridgevilleFreshly Painted & RenovatedEat-In KitchenPrivate Front & Back PorchFenced BackyardDriveway & On-Street ParkingQuiet Neighborhood, but near shops, I-79, Parks, LibraryApply here: https://home.cozy.co/apply/26660
I think it will keep your commute under 45 minutes, dependent upon how close this address is to I79. Then it is a quick hop to 376 and then the exit and directions to the campus.
