Article includes the new Penn Mathilda apartments in Bloomfield. I am familiar with this building through my daughters art group's use of the retail level flex space on Penn Ave.

What does it take to develop a housing project with affordable units in Pittsburgh? | PublicSource

From a Penn Plaza residents perspective.

Regarding the second article: She's a college-educated woman who works part-time. What is the expectation? She even says something like: I guess I'll have to work full-time now so I can afford an apartment where I want to be.

Affordable housing is a problem, but why are all the articles about white college educated people who just don't want to work or move? Wasn't there another one recently from Polish Hill? Using examples that don't actually represent the problem just makes the whole issue easier for people to dismiss.

That second article is annoying. Does someone have a right to live in a neighborhood because their family before has for generations? If so, then would it be ok for me to displaced someone because my family has some old claim in a neighborhood that supercedes theirs?

Public Source is being irresponsible with this coverage.

Here we go again. Just because certain parts of the city have become super desirable and expensive DOES NOT mean that Pittsburgh lacks affordable housing. There is PLENTY of it in and outside of the city.

Proposed solutions of taxing your average income earner more so that others can have nicer housing in desirable areas will ultimately have an outcome opposite of the intent.

Seriously, why waste money fighting for affordable housing in East Liberty when you can promote market rate affordable housing in the Hill District, Manchester/Shadeland or most of the south hills. Promote the renaissance in Allentown and focusing on how many units get reserved in East Liberty or the Civic Arena. Use the taxes generated to rebuild streets and schools and stop subsidizing small groups of people (rich and poor) over the rest of the city.

Needing safe affordable housing is not playing the victim. These "victims" voices are not heard. Instead we hear from activist that support the voiceless among us. A family dependent on the PPS Promise scholarship program will be greatly impacted if they cannot find housing within the city. That is 40k in scholarship money per child. Not to mention the lack of public transportation to get to and from job centers. The housing is not there.

Section 8 stigma continues to leave low-income families with no place to live | PublicSource

Not much information in the article about what the stigma is or how the data was generated, however it did note that many landlords did not feel the value of the vouchers covered enough of the costs associated with entering into the program. Maybe if the government covered utility costs or green upgrades as well, more landlords would see the benefit.
