A comprehensive rail system.
Right now The T just covers downtown and the southside. It should go east, west, and north. North to Cranberry with a regional extension to Butler. East to Monroeville with a regional extension to Greensburg. West to the airport with a regional extension to Weirton. And regional lines to Kittanning and Washington.

A comedy club
Might need some support from a foundation to keep it going. Return something like Funny Bone back to Station Square. Need to redouble the effort to make Station Square a tourist destination. Local improv is good but what is needed is a place to attract the comedians touring the country.

A hostel
There is "Not Another Hostel" but last I checked, you have to jump through a lot of hoops to be able to stay there. This might also need foundation support to keep it going.

Commuter rail? Peduto was turned down by Allegheny Valley Railroad in Oakland because of freight traffic but other lines can't have as much. Oakmont-Verona-Lawrenceville-Strip-Downtown seems like a no-brainer. Add the lines you mentioned. I can't imagine the areas outside of the city have so much freight traffic that it would prevent commuter rail lines.

Arcade Comedy is great, but it is mostly Improv theater.

Airbnb has helped ease the lack of a real hostel. Still would be helpful though.

I agree about the rail system. That would be huge.

I'll add:

-Immigrants - we have some, but not like most cities.
-Cleaner air - is better than 50 years ago, but not good.
-Cleaner water - PWSA just needs to start over. Plus fracking fluids leaching into our waterways aren't helping.

The Improv at the Waterfront brings in some decent names.

Pittsburgh really lacks a true taqueria. Someplace open late with al pastor cooking on a spit.

Increase the birthrate to 20x and wait 20yrs. Also they can't set foot outside the city. Crazy mysterious babies.

Yeah, that might do it. I'd propose that the Rivers Casino add a comedy club to their hotel project. That would fit in perfectly with their goal of entertainment. I'd rather see it in the downtown area.

a substantial hillbilly culture population: neighbors that can fix anything, are inviting to anyone to share their grilled steaks, and who are as earthy as, well, dirt.

I agree. As a blow in, I have found it very hard to make friends here and some people think that because they went to school, and college here, that they are so important in their bubble. Yes, they maybe, but they are not very open to outsiders. Just my personal opinion and my experience.
