I understand this, but for some getting some back means you have less during the previous year, forcing you into some sort of financial discipline. I know that doesn't ring true for many, but I've been like that since I was free of my family as a teen. That orthodox perspective had helped for the post-college years, especially.

That's just temporary discipline. What do you do once the money is back? Putting the money directly into a retirement account would be a better form of discipline.

personally, i put it in savings. my roths are always maxed out, and there is monthly amount to an IRA. the discipline spreads like a virus and becomes a way of life! i imagine some could use it for immediate purchases, or to hammer down outstanding debt or whatever.
