I considered they were making a joke, but on this forum it's usually just poorly written racism.

I often wonder that too, how people put themselevs in jeapordy knowing they could be shot. I think it may be the "it doesn't happen to me" attitude/thinking.

I never liked getting off the T and getting on the bus at this location. The environment in the afternoon seemed to be charged many days and a bit tense.

No. It is just how people live, how they are, from habit, psychology, or environmental response. Try living in a lower economic class inner city neighborhood and you'd understand. These people are not thinking promotions, retirement, and saving so the family can take the alaskan cruise.

Incidents like this are more about reaction and impulse, and probably a learned self-preservation response.
