There was a few mislead people protesting, but there always are. Can’t imagine sailing across the Atlantic in the 1400’s. Crazy times for sure and the protesters wouldn’t last a day back then, but they clearly don’t have a clue about history. Well done Bloomfield.

I’m not Italian but met friends that are for the parade like we do most every year. Always a great time.

Heard the clowns/protesters went as far as handing out flyers that said the parade was canceled.

Imagine doing all that and still having the energy to commit genocide. History is amazing.

Imagine still blaming these terrible acts on people 500+ years later.

History is amazing, if you’re willing to learn from it.

Is that any more realistic that celebrating someone for something he didn't actually do 500 years later? What most of us were taught about Christopher Columbus is a myth, and real study of history involves taking a hard look and reassessing what actually happened and its results.

You brought up genocide. Who is celebrating genocide?

Now you're just being willfully obtuse. No one is celebrating genocide, but when GG posts about how great it is to have a Columbus Day parade, what are we actually celebrating? Columbus did not discover America. He was not technically Italian (there was no such thing at the time,) so we're not celebrating that. While he didn't set out to commit genocide, thousands of indigenous people were wiped out as a direct result of his actions. And he wasn't really that successful as a trader and a colonialist. He never reached India by sea, and the outposts he set up in the Caribbean were failures. Why does this dude deserve a parade?

Your first rebuttal was genocide, and blaming Columbus and celebrating the parade for it 500+ years later.

If you want to argue changing the name of the parade due to what we learned from history, that’s a valid complaint and I certainly agree with it, but obtuse is blaming what happened 500+ years ago on people today.

Um, you need to learn about real history. These were very hard time and amazing feats by the toughest of men. You can’t go back in time with our soft brains. We couldn’t possibly understand those times.

Columbus was the one who kicked off the chain of events that led to me being here, so I think having a holiday for him is cool.
