I have to make a trip up to State College in a few days. I’ve done the trip many times before but always via the “main” routes out of the Pgh area. 79 to 80. 28 to Brookville. 22 to Altoona.

This time around I have extra time and a desire to find a route that’s not on 4 lane roads. I realize this could turn a 2.5 hour drive into a 5 hour drive and I’m totally ok with that

Turnpike east to Irwin-then 30 east through Bedford to Breezewood is beautiful. Then 99 north as described.

This is a great thread. We have friends who are PSU professors and have driven the 376 to 22 to 99 route many, many times to get to their townhome in Toftrees. We are actually visiting them this weekend. I've always been curious about more scenic "back road" ways, so I'm going to piggy-back and follow this thread. Thanks for starting it!

This is the most direct and quickest route, generally speaking. It's scenic overall. I enjoy the stretch around Dishong Mountain Road as well as the stretch with that really LONG hill just east of Blairsville. The stretch through Murrysville is always a huge PITA, though. I wish they could build a bypass around Murrysville someday.

As I suspected. Not any ideas for two lane roads. I’m thinking of taking PA 286 to where it meets 219 south of Dubois then going from there.

Using Monroeville (I-76/376/PA TP) as a starting point continue east on US 22 through Murrysville Blairsville and Hollidaysburg / Duncansville, (around 85 miles in all. About ten miles past the turnoff to Altoona, at a village called Water Street, you'll see a junction with PA 45 (you should see a few roadside signs promoting Indian Caverns; if so, follow them).

Leave US 22 and follow PA 45 East, this road is a 2-lane masterpiece. You will descend a steep hill, duck under what's left of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and immediately cross the Little Juniata River, This is Spruce Creek. Jimmy Carter used to like to fish in these parts.

From here, continue on PA 34 east for about 29 miles to Pine Grove Mills, PA45 and PA 26 combine here for a short distance. Stay on PA 26 (PA 45 goes to Boalsburg and Lewisburg (another 2-lane scenic route) but 26 will become College Avenue, and will lead directly into the heart of Happy Valley.

I have many pleasant memories gathered along this road -- and am considering having my ashes scattered from the air over this valley -- when the time comes.

Take some photos and post them here. Stop at a few diner places and try to get free food, like Rick Sebak!

Wow. Wow. Wow! Thanks for this! I never know about PA-45. Looking at the map it looks like you can take it from just east of Altoona all the way to near Danville, PA. I frequently drive to Scranton and may take that way sometime to get to I-80 from Altoona. Thank you!
