George Benson

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Benson

"Benson was born and raised in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At the age of seven, he first played the ukulele in a corner drug store, for which he was paid a few dollars. At the age of eight, he played guitar in an unlicensed nightclub on Friday and Saturday nights, but the police soon closed the club down. At the age of nine, he started to record. Out of the four sides he cut, two were released: "She Makes Me Mad" backed with "It Should Have Been Me",with RCA Victor in New York; although one source indicates this record was released under the name "Little Georgie", the 45rpm label is printed with the name George Benson. The single was produced by Leroy Kirkland for RCA's rhythm and blues label, Groove Records. As he has stated in an interview, Benson's introduction to showbusiness had an effect on his schooling.

Benson attended and graduated from Schenley High School."

Wonderful idea for a thread.

Sonny Clark

"Clark was born and raised in Herminie, Pennsylvania, a coal mining town east of Pittsburgh.[2] His parents were originally from Stone Mountain, Georgia.[2] His miner father, Emery Clark, died of a lung disease two weeks after Sonny was born.[2] Sonny was the youngest of eight children.[2] At age 12, he moved to Pittsburgh."

Sadly, Sonny died at the way too young age of 31. Sonny was wonderful on the piano.

I don't have just one favorite per se from the area. Instead some links to a few of my favorite groups or musicians/singers from the area. Ditto for George Benson.

Phyllis Hyman

One of the best singers ever with big city style. Phyllis Hyman personified the 80 with a sound like no other. She will be honored with a musical tribute during Pittsburgh’s 2022 Black Music Festival in July.

Thanks for this. I've heard of Hyman and even though I think I know music history pretty well, I know hardly anything about her music. This song is really excellent. Her story so sad. I hear a lot of Anita Baker in her voice. Gonna delve more into her wok in the future. Grew up in St. Clair Village? Had no idea.

Overall, I don't think Pittsburgh has any bigger more talented star than George Benson. He could play and could sing. Listen to his version of "Greatest Love of All". Man, he does the song more justice than Whitney ever did.

There are others I'll mention later. But yeah, Benson is the best. Great discussion idea.

Yeah, let's obfuscate with a music thread while the right takes away things like democracy, separation of church and state, a woman's control over her body, etc.

The world doesn’t stop just because some folks don’t like certain things that are going on.

Bret Michaels and Rusted Root also from Pittsburgh
