Pittsburgh ranks 3rd best for "15-minute city" in America

https://www.pghcitypaper.com/pittsbu...t?oid=20008840

"Pittsburgh’s hilly terrain, car-filled roads, and abundance of bridges can present a challenge to walkers and bicyclists trying to get from neighborhood to neighborhood, but the city might be closer to a strong walking and bicycling metropolis than expected.

A new report from moveBuddha ranks Pittsburgh third for having the greatest potential for transitioning into a "15-minute city." A 15-minute city aims to provide everything — including education, work, health care, food, and recreation — within a 15-minute walk or bike trip."

15-minute city

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/15-minute_city

"A 15-minute city is a residential urban concept in which most daily necessities can be accomplished by either walking or cycling from residents' homes. The concept (see also the New Urbanism of the 1980s) is present, among many, in D'Acci's Isobenefit Urbanism since 2013 ("The Isobenefit Urbanism approach aims to create cities in which each dweller can do her/his usual main daily activities by walking or at maximum biking") was popularized by Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo and inspired by French-Colombian scientist Carlos Moreno who in 2016 coined the term. 15-minute cities are built from a series of 5-minute neighborhoods, also known as complete communities or walkable neighborhoods. The concept has been described as a "return to a local way of life"."

Within a bike ride or bus ride at least.

Add Mount Washington to the list.

Where did you specify "universities and hospitals"? You said "education and health care". All of those neighborhoods are proximate to schools and medical/professional offices/urgent care centers.

Technically it is about a 15-minute walk to Duquesne University from the western portion of the South Side Flats. Additionally it is about a 15-minute walk from most of Squirrel Hill North. It is about a 15-minute bike ride from most of those neighborhoods to a hospital, too.

bottom line - pittsburgh gets high marks as a 15-minute city

Pittsburgh Pioneers the 15-Minute City

https://ecodistricts.org/2020/09/09/...5-minute-city/

"As downtown Pittsburgh’s skyscrapers have emptied, our neighborhoods have become the epicenters of our daily lives. The statistics in Pittsburgh paint a grim portrait of downtown with dozens of restaurants closed in 2020 and a substantial rise in the amount of commercial real estate vacant or available for subleasing. As I started working from home, however, I noticed how many businesses along my neighborhood’s commercial strip were open and providing key services. In addition to our highly essential local coffee shop, we’ve got a handful of restaurants offering takeout and curbside pickup, an acupuncturist, barber, and small grocery. Over 90% of our neighborhood’s commercial space is occupied and thriving."

and by pittsburgh i mean the city of pittsburgh

1. do you live in the city of pittsburgh?

2. if so could you maintain your quality of life without owning a car?

3. what would need to change for you to live in the city of pittsburgh and maintain your quality of life without owning a car?

Goodbye car ownership, hello clean air: welcome to the future of transport

https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2016/...-of-transport/

"In many ways, the motor vehicle has shaped modern society and the urban areas in which more than half of us live. But as global incomes rise, cars and trucks are choking these cities with deadly pollution and productivity-sapping traffic jams. More than a million people are killed in motor vehicle accidents each year, and many more are threatened by transportation’s contribution to global warming.

Imagine instead a world where fleets of autonomous vehicles that are electric and shared (FAVES) slash the number of vehicles on the road by as much as 90%. Hailing and paying for a ride or delivery is as easy as tapping a smart phone app. Car loans and insurance payments shrink or disappear because renting a vehicle when it would otherwise sit idle (or feeding electricity back to the electric grid) more than pays for it.

Perhaps best of all, imagine wider, less congested streets with more room for pedestrians and bicycles, clean air, much less global warming, shorter commutes, and even “crowd-funded” fleets of vehicles whose routing and pricing software is tuned to minimize energy use or provide low-cost transportation to underserved regions."
