I'll be the first to be wishy washy about it -- it could be good or it could be bad. Good like Las Vegas, now a family destination with a growing city -- or bad like Atlantic City, where you can't walk off the strip without being in high danger.

I think it could be good -- people love to gamble, and with casinos also being entertainment destinations with shows and restaurants, it could provide lots of jobs from custodial to management.

Heck -- we've never been to Reno or Tahoe or Vegas to gamble, we've always gone for other reasons and the 20 bucks or so lost to gambling was just fun (we are REALLY not gamblers... )

I keep hearing that Las Vegas is like crime capital nowadays, everywhere but the actual casinos. Is this true?

Time will tell whether it will make the N. Side a mini-Vegas or a mini-Atlantic City. Gambling did not help the mountain towns of Colorado as much as they had hoped it would.

I really dread the casinos coming to Pittsburgh because I think they will have a negative impact on our society. But my girlfriend landed an awesome job at the casino so I'm trying to remain optimistic.

I don't know -- but I do know that a lot of real estate speculation was going there... I know of two people that bought high end condo properties that weren't even started and flipped them for a big profit before they were finished.

I can't imagine crime being worse than where I live....

It's one casino... it's a novalty, not a a big district. It's also to be isolated in its location. I am for it as an entertainment option.. not for me because I don't get much joy out of pressing a button, or pulling the lever, but many do, and will be a nice revenue generator - but not the $avior that some say.

It's eventually going to be in the North Side. How's that isolated?

I think there's more than one planned. In addition to the one at the meadows, they are building one in the North Side and possibly the Hill District and Station Square. My girlfriend is hoping she'll get promoted to the North Side casino because it will be easier to get to from her house.

OMG, I forgot about that. I've always been so amazed other cities still have mafia problems. It's like we're asking them to come back!

The mafia never left. They just changed their name to politician.

I only gambled once in my life. The machine at Mountaineer ate my twenty dollars and I left. At least at the nudie bar across the street, I could see the slot that my money was disappearing in.

I do fully support gambling though. I look at it as a stupidity tax that people volunteer to pay. Besides casino employees, there are many other jobs associated with them. Construction workers, electricians, plumbers, truck drivers, maintenance people, food service workers, linen suppliers, dishes, and cutlery suppliers, security, entertainers, managers, drivers. The list goes on and on. Pick one small aspect of it, and you could own the company that supplies that item.
