If not Pittsburgh....
If you live in Pittsburgh, where else in the US would you live and why?
I would either live in San Francisco (big GLBT community) or somehwere similar to Pittsburgh (cost of living) but would have a better arts and entertainmsnt scene (concerts, movies, arts, etc.) I don't know what city would fall into that catagory, but I hear Portland is cool.)
But I would miss Pittsburgh's history if I moved....

Well, it depends on budget. If I had the money, I would have a condo on Miami Beach, not necessarily SOBE. I like warm weather and a beachy lifestyle. Based on my budget now. I don't know. It really is hard to find a city that has all that Pittsburgh has to offer relative to cost of living. Not to mention the fact that it has four seasons, which appeals to me. If I lived in Miami Beach, I would travel north a lot. I could see myself living in Boston, which has a lot of the things that Pittsburgh has, maybe just a bit more, for a price, of course.

We relatively recently looked at Chicago and DC, and a little bit even at Portland and Denver, when thinking about where to settle. The problem is that no place we looked at could compete with Pittsburgh once we factored in housing (we didn't even bother with places like Boston, New York, or San Francisco). Meanwhile, most places with as cheap or cheaper housing (e.g., the Texas cities or Detroit, now Cleveland) weren't particularly appealing.
So my "if money wasn't a factor" answer might be Chicago--I think it is my favorite of the big U.S. cities.
If money is a factor--I dunno, Indianapolis? I actually don't know that much about Indianapolis, but it seems to have some of the things l like about Pittsburgh, most notably relatively inexpensive housing in historic centrally located neighborhoods. But suffice it to say I am pretty happy with Pittsburgh.
Edit: On a whim, I hunted up this City Data thread:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/india...ittsburgh.html
Indianapolis sounds fine, but it also sounds like it doesn't have much in the way of the sorts of neighborhoods I like in Pittsburgh. Oh well, I guess the hunt for a Plan B I hope I never need will have to continue.

Where to live is always a personal choice, but every place has its history. SF's is pretty interesting.

It might be interesting, but let me tell you -- it's August 22, and I'm wearing a sweater, corduroy pants and fuzzy sheepskin slippers..... and have a down comforter on our bed.
It's COLD!

We discovered Burlington VT on our honeymoon and I love it there. Boston would be another choice.

I like mid-atlantic east coast cities (DC, Annapolis, Baltimore, Philly), but I would love to live on the west coast for a few years (Seattle, Portland, maybe somewhere in CA). I love four seasons but hate the bitter cold so the midatlantic works for me weather and people wise.
If I could deal with the heat, I'd do Austin or Atlanta.

Possibly Boston, Seattle, Portland, or Asheville...though probably not Asheville because I'd prefer to be in the North.

I recently returned from a vacation in a small beach town. I loved it! It was refreshing to effortlessly ride a bike everywhere (flat ground, bike friendly roads).
When I started talking to locals about how great it would be to live there, I found out that they're miserable. Apparently, it's a very corrupt town where one man basically owns half of it. You can't get anywhere unless you're in the 'in' group.
I realized that I have no idea where I'd rather live. While I think small, walkable towns in fantastic areas seem to be the ideal place, I have no desire to live in a corrupt town. I've had bad experiences with small town corruption. I have no tollerance for the 'good-ol-boy' way of living. I know I wouldn't be happy in a super large city too.
I guess I need a town that's large enough for everyone to not know everyone. I need something like Pittsburgh but in a better location!
