there were more than a couple thousand at the permitted march on friday - police estimates are 4200-4500, organizer estimates are 8,000. i heard 10,000 but i don't know the source. the truth is usually somewhere in between the police number and the organizer number.

but yeah, the superbowl celebrations/riots were bigger. and also much more destructive and disruptive. whoever was making predictions about the size of the protests was way off.

All I remember is a few couches set on fire by the Pitt students. What other damage did I miss?

Wow, the both of you slapping Pitt in the face!

I'm a local and a CMU student actually. But yes, they do seem to do a good job at causing ruckus. No wonder the "anarchists" basically recruited them!

You know, when I was at Pitt in the late 60s/early 70s, the campus was fairly quiet. Not dead to protest, mind you, but fairly quiet. There was lots of protesting/rioting going on at Penn State. We used to say it was b/c there was nothing else to do up there!

Defenitely there is much needed improvement and with the new development plan that they have, it may either help or may be a huge dissapointment (it can go either way.) I never ridden public transportation in othe rcities, so I can't compare.

I guess my question would be, how is the transportation in better cities? To avoid going off topic, maybe start a new thread on this question?
I think that Pittsburgh does a good job given its size. DC, London, NYC, Toronto, Boston, SF are places with better transit, but they are obviously much bigger. I am hoping that the new transit plan will improve things - their plans for my route (41E) do seem to be improvements.

If only the "spine" plan in the 90's had not been scuttled...

Pitt has a very large student body. It was a tiny percentage that was involved. And, many of those involved were merely observers who got caught between police fronts.
