Hope - hello.

polish hill is dumpy. lets not beat around the bush. the structures are old, unkept, and seemingly unmaintained. there were a few college students there, and a number of people 25-45, i think, but many older and elderly people. thats not a judgement, but just a statement of my observations. old people in a place like pgh can be wonderful neighbors - if/when they realize they have no reason to be fearful of you, they tend to care very much for the neighborhood, and feed you well. but i digress....

when i lived there in '99 (my God, 10 yrs ago?!) there WERE a few homes there that had been rehabbed and were beautiful. because they were structures built from that typical architectural style of many decades past, the homes' exteriors were definitely unique!
a quick glance at google maps shows me that you may find one either at Melwood/Finland or Melwood/Jewel. if i remember correctly, there were a couple at or near that intersection. chances are, the gentrification peetered out w/ those two.

polish hill is QUIET. except for the ghetto asshats i lived next door to, the place was dead (which can be good). the view from my kitchen was surreal - i could see Gooskis and the other 'ridge' across the valley (bloomfield area). in the winter time, id swear i was in northern italy or switzerland. i loved taking the bus to the bottom of the bridge (the 'Herron Street Bridge'?) and climbing the city steps to Hancock Street (interesting feat when they were snow and ice covered!). wow - my quads burned. what great exercise, just to get home.

people there are weird. they arent friendly, and i dont care who disagrees with me. yea yea, you have to get to know them, etc. i feel a curiosity about anyone i see lingering about in my neighborhood, dont you? i thought in PH people were the typical fearful-of-strangers types that is prevalent in the world today. but in all fairness, i ended up there a short while, and did not really get into the fabric of the place.

but honestly, the geography of pittsburgh is mind-boggling, and makes it a weird but fantastic city. Sorry if this is way more than you cared for, Hope!

Not too much at all! I love it your description of the buildings and views!

The surreal quietness and the stark winter descriptions intrigued me.

Sounds like you might have eventually found your place in the neighborhood if you had a chance to stay longer.

Afterall, you were being fed by someone while only living there a few months!

Thanks for sharing what you loved about Polish Hill!
