One term I think is overused today is "strong black woman."

From everything I see today I think that the black community defines a strong black women as someone who's best trait is being loud and mean.

I see these examples of "strong black women" by the popular definition:

- A woman who gets up in someone's face snapping their fingers and screaming bloody murder over anything.
- A woman who has three or more kids (usually by at least two fathers) and gets no help from the fathers.
- A woman who cuts someone off in conversation many times.
- A woman who has to have her way all the time, even when comprimising a little would be sensible and end the debate peacefully.
- A woman who slaps her man and not expecting her man to hit back.
- A woman who starts a loud argument when her food isn't prepared right.
- A woman who will spend a grand on a weave before paying ALL the bills.

I think is definition is a diservice to "real" strong black women.

This is how I would define a strong black woman.

- A woman who settles arguments in private by talking rationally.
- A woman who makes sure that she doesn't have kids when she ain't ready.
- A woman who speaks elquoently and does her best to have a respectful conversation.
- A woman who is able to compromise.
- A woman who won't hit her man and won't allow a man to hit her.
- A woman who disagrees respectfully.

In short a woman who carries herself well but strong in any circumstance.

Sadly, to be honest, strong black women are in the very small minority today from what I see. The best examples for strong black women: Michelle Obama, Maya Angelou, Physlia Rashad on the Cosby Show.

Interesting.... I hadn't thought of it like that, but I think you have a point.

Black women need to be strong. It is very difficult for black women in today's world. When they are successful, of which I know many, they feel the need to justify their hard work as being their own and not handed to them.

That being said, being "strong" does not mean being tough, or rude.

I think it bears repeating: Strong black women seem to also believe that raising kids without "my baby daddy" around is a compliment and deserving of recognition.

Personal responsibility is severly distorted in the black community. I personally think its a crying shame and detrimental to the future of African-Americans in the US.

No...I haven't heard the term "strong black woman" used very often so I don't know what they would even be talking about. I'd have to take it on a case by case basis, like all things.

Where am I not hanging out to be missing the overuse of this phrase?

I would suggest you change whom you associate with, as just about every black woman I know would fall under your definition of "strong black woman"...IMO the easiest way to spot one would be to look at the one's not saying "HEY I'M A STRONG BLACK WOMEN." Usually when something is obvious there's no need to go around announcing it.

In the meanwhile, I'm going to go pop some popcorn and wait for the mass amount of stereotypical, negative comments that are sure to come...

Oh and I'm just dying for you to provide an example of a black person anywhere in the world saying that this is what defines a strong black woman...-

I'd love to see that one

Hmmm the only time I've ever actually seen that situation complimented is when the "baby daddy" (I guess we're all in ghetto mode today) isn't any good. So if the girl realizes that the boy/man isn't adding anything to her life and then makes steps to improve her life and take care of her children; i.e getting an education, having a good job, being a good mother WITHOUT him or public assistance then people will acknowledge her efforts...however since we don't typically use the phrase "strong black woman" as often as Hollywood or white people chances are they'd say "that girl has a good head on her shoulders. She learned from her mistakes and kept it moving"

I don't really see what the problem is with that...I guess we should just keep kicking her in the head for getting pregnant in the first place, right?

Yeah, they're getting owned by affirmative action.

I will give you credit in that at least you said, based on what you saw, this is what you thought. Not that it represented reality, but based on what you saw this is what you thought. I don't think you can fault a person for reaching a faulty conclusion, because they were given bad information (and even still you caveated it as your opinion, not fact).

However, it is with a great deal of confidence that I say the above criteria is not the popular definition of a strong black woman (at least not within the African American community). As for how it is depicted in media that may be another thing.

Where are you seeing the bad Black women? The media? In poor neigborhoods? The media generally doesn't give you a full view of Black-America.

Non-issue.
