The war in Afghanistan will consume more money this year alone than we spent on the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War and the Spanish-American War — combined, adjusted for INFLATION!!

Psst!

Those wars you listed involved a realtively small number of young draftees armed with personal muskets and swords. They rode horses into battle and were often paid in military script. There was no need for a VA because they all died of syphilis, infected wounds and chronic alcoholism.

Why would the current military not cost a lot more?

We understand it costs more. But it is quite amazing that we pay so much and have relatively poor results.

The interesting part isn't how he compares the spending to other wars, it is how you can compare the spending on the military vs the cost of things that might have a positive effect.

He mentions schools in Afghanistan, which could only have a positive effect. But we could also look at our own country. Lets see.

We already spend more money on defense than we do medicare and medicaid or social security.

People complain about food stamps and public housing. Those programs are something like 1.5% of the federal budget. A fraction of the cost of the longest war America has ever had(Afghanistan). This war could last several more years. And now we are potentially on the brink of war with North Korea. And Iran is posturing because of the whole Israel/Gaza strip issue.

The wars need to stop, our foreign interventions need to stop, stop sending our boys to die in pointless wars, stop lying to the American people, and stop telling us we are unpatriotic if we don't support your imperialism.

What other results were you hoping for?

If our military makes our enemies dead, they have done their job.

If our politicians try to use otherwise perfectly crafted grunts to promote their social agenda in foreign nations, that is an inproper use of the military.

We are trying to hold on to a defacto Empire we started after WW2. This Empire has run its course and it is time to stop throwing good money and lives after bad. We need to stop protecting the international business community that could care less about us so long as they do not have to pay for the protection they receive. We need to get out of the entire Middle East and Indian sub continent and spend the money saved, not on crooked military contractors, but on hones domestic contractors restoring the old and creating a new efficient infrastructure inside the United States. We do not need to spend some benighted dump with a few drops of oil.

How many of our soldiers have come home in caskets? Two wars are going on over 8 years that we haven't won yet! What a waste!

Still trying to figure out what we are winning. I'm truly disturbed by the amount of soldiers coming home disabled.
Being a supporter of Vietnam Veterans of America, I can
assure everyone that these men and woman coming home will need our support the rest of their lives. Sure, it's popular to support them now, but what about 10, 15, 20 years from now? Will our present day vets have a similar
fate as to those from Vietnam? Highly likely.

Number Of Disabled Vets Up With Iraq, Afghan Wars

$59 billion a year to compensate injured warriors in 25 years, up from today's $29 billion, according to internal documents obtained by The Associated Press. And the Veterans Affairs Department concedes the bill could be much higher.

Why?

Worse wounds. More disabilities. More vets aware of the benefits and quicker to file for them.

Also, ironically, advanced medical care. Troops come home with devastating injuries that might well have killed them in earlier wars.

The NEXT time an out of control politician incites you to war, recall how much war costs in resources overall, not to mention lives. Then recall how they are almost impossible to stop before total devastation is wrought.

Then oust the raging idiot before he can do any harm, and go back to doing what good you can to improve the situation with diplomacy.
