Do any care about the good of humanity, or only to the extent it makes them a profit?
Is it inevitable that they become greedy?
Greed is part of everyone, regardless of what anyone says. It is "natural" in that it is part of the fall of man from God's grace. This means that everyone needs to learn to control the urge to have much more (not just more, but overly so) than they need. Many times, I would say, the supreme greed seen in many large companies comes from the separation of themselves from the effects of what they do.
What is wrong with being greedy as long as you're not inconsiderate? The desire to have money does not afflict only rich people, poor people desire it too so doesn’t that make them as greedy as the rich. Big companies are run by people whose job is to bring more money into the company; No profit no company. This vilifying of big business is going too far, their only crime is being successful yet all of us want to be as successful (wealthy) as a big business. Sounds like double standards to me.
So a big business donates 1 million when they earned (profited) 100 million, is this greedy? How much did you/I donate, relatively?
Most companies care about their image and thus do things for charity. They also care about their money, yes, and do things for charity that they can write off.
Either way, I would guess that 100% of all large businesses donate something to charity. How does this make them evil?

Obviously they're not all evil.
But to the extent that some are evil, i blame the corporate culture that emphasizes profits over EVERYTHING!!! Truth is, the American people are responsible for letting it happen. We bought into it, lock, stock and barrel starting in 1980....and we've been living with it ever since.
Say Fortune 1000?

I always compare capitalism (and politics) to boxing.
To become one of the 1000 best boxers in the World, you are going to have to knock a few mother...... out.
Otherwise, somebody will knock you out.
Are they evil? uhhhh, maybe.
But just like in boxing, in capitalism nice people never win.

You're asking the question so as to get the wrong answer.
Here's the question you should ask: Why are corporations (artificial persons) and their investors not held criminally and civilly liable for injuries that are inflicted in the course of doing business?
Answer: limited liability.
In essence, the privilege of limited liability is the foundation of evil.
Think about it - if you were an investor and you receive gain that was the result of deliberate pain and suffering inflicted upon another, you would be immune from criminal prosecution.
Do you think that is moral?

What you are describing is NOT capitalism, but usury.
Capitalist Principles
CAPITALISM - An economic system in which the means of production, distribution and exchange are privately owned and operated for private profit.
- - - WEBSTER'S DICTIONARY
PRIVATE PROPERTY - "As protected from being taken for public uses, is such property as belongs absolutely to an individual, and of which he has the exclusive right of disposition. Property of a specific, fixed and tangible nature, capable of being in possession and transmitted to another, such as houses, lands, and chattels."
- - - Black's Law dictionary, sixth ed., p.1217
If you concatenate capitalism with private property, you can see the "inconvenient truth".
Capitalism is an economic system in which the means of production, distribution and exchange are absolutely owned by individuals and operated for their individual profit.
{Corporations are creatures of government, and not absolutely owned by an individual, hence they are not "private property" nor part of capitalism, as defined. Corporations owe their existence to government, and must pay tribute / taxes for that privilege.}
Addendum:
Under American law, absolute ownership of land, house, tools, production, etc, is protected as part of one's inalienable right to life, liberty and property upon which you can pursue happiness without asking permission.
