Yes, the NBA is private, but this move sends a huge message to people that says, "You better watch what you say", and I don't like that. It reminds me of Ari Flescher and the Bushies after 9/11.
No, it doesn't.
It says, "You better watch what you say when you have signed a contract that says you can't say XYZ."
No one censored his speech, he was able to say whatever he wanted, but just in case you were not aware, you are not free from the consequences of your free speech.
We didn't censor anybody, the NBA fined someone for violating a rule they agreed to abide by as part of their contractual obligation. Smart companies generally don't want to alienate potential customers.
Who is Kobe Bryant ? He is a basket ball player right? Okay- I guess when you make the kind of money he does- He can say what ever he wants...even if it cost him a hundred grand....maybe next time he can get real nasty and come out with a 200 thousand dollar slur..
As a condition to his participation in the NBA, and for the team he plays, Mr. Bryant executed an agreement containing provisions which address appropriate behavior. It's a contract issue agreed to by Mr. Bryant, the NBA and his team.
I expect the private institutions in our country to follow that example. One more reason not to watch.
If some guy walked up to you on the street and started calling you every name in the book, what would you do? Don't tell me you would infringe upon HIS free speech right?
Many posters here are confusing the RIGHT to free speech with the right to be free from the consequences of said speech.
What you are in fact suggesting is that OTHERS give up their right to freely express displeasure with another persons point of view.
It's ironic how someone wants to infringe upon the rights of others under the guise of protecting someones free speech.
Kobe can keep making gay slurs and the NBA which pays his salary and whom he represents can fine him. Kobe can quit the NBA and continue to make any comments he wants, he can keep making the comments and they can keep fining him. They are BOTH exercising their rights.
