I saw the first one on Haiti and the Dominican Republic lastnight. It's kinda interesting how many Black Dominicans don't view themselves as Black but as Indio or Indian. But when many Dominicans visit the U.S they get a different view of themselves and race. Dominican racial history on the island seems to be so twisted.
Not that different. I worked with an American born Dominican up in NY and somehow our discussion turned to Blackness and he flat out said he was not Black. I was like you know they brought Africans to the DR. He's like he's dark because of Indian blood.
Fast forward the next year he has a kid and invites me to the baptismal party and proceeds to introduce me to a man who he calls grandfather. Dude was blacker than most people in my family and I'm a first generation American with Ghanaian antecedants.
"In denial" sums it up well. It is like that around the world. For centuries whites have gone everywhere and told locals they are primitive and stupid, no wonder people of color don't exactly brag about being what they are.
Same in North Africa, where even today most people are of Berber origin, but the Arab invaders treated them like inferior humans. So today most Berbers say they are Arabs just to be accepted.
It's really time humans openly challenged that old notion that being light-skinned is desirable and better.
The world needs a new 'black is beautiful' movement

Dominicans tried to burn their history books to deny who they were.
I have seen Dominicans who are the same skin color as Michelle Obama who say that they are not Black.
While some blacks in my family are lighter than Halle Berry yet proudly proclaim their blackness. Interesting contrast between the racial dynamics of both places. This should be an interesting series.
Be sure to check out tonight's episode(Tues Apr 26). They will focus on Cuba.
Do you know what time? I need to record it.
