It shapes public opinion by informing it of lies. Its purpose is to control the direction of mass consciousness, not to offer anything of substance or an explanation of reality.
I think now days they have a much ahrder problem being both believed and shaping opion. That is because unlike the past the Big 3 do not control content so much. That and the public media such as this one.
They did a better job of just informing back when there were only three TV channels. Now, with 24/7 mainstream and cable news, the internet, and pundits falling all over themselves covering news events from every viewpoint on the face of the earth many sources have moved over into the realm of shaping opinions. But if they do "help shape opinions" it's only because a person is limiting their exposure to only one news source. You have to watch/hear three different sources a day and form your own opinions on the public debate of the day!
the mass media (both sides) does more to try and shape than actually inform. Even 60 minutes, they present their segments in the way they choose to present them from enterviewing and picking and choosing what they will use.

DAmn, I hate it whan I agree with you. Yes, we all need to watch TV programming from both sides. We choose FOX and PBS mostly and we read 2 newspapers and subscribe to 2 news magazines. Well hubby reads more than I do, I will admit.
It's comforting to see at the time being 95 percent of voters voting shaping. So the next question is why are we watching it and contributing to the problem?
I see that as of now 19 people voted shapes and 1 said informs. I guess I better keep my vote the same, shapes, but say that they shape according to what they want to see. Since so many of us use Fox as a main source it is easy to see why so many others think so lowly of us for not using the sources they use. The others are all jealous of Fox and do what they can to shape public opinion against them. It is really very funny.
