Despite the recession, the overall violent crime rate in the US continued to drop for 2010...FBI: 5.5% Drop in Nationwide Violent Crime - TIME (http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,2073604,00.html - broken link)

Note: The FBI just released the preliminary crime stats for 2010.
