The man described by counterterrorism officials as al Qaeda's "military brain," Ilyas Kashmiri, was killed in a drone strike Friday night in Pakistan, a spokesman for his group, the jihadist Harakat-ul-Jihad-Islami, said.

The operational head and main military mind behind Al Qaeda was killed last night in a unilateral drone strike in Pakistan.
I guess Obama doesn't care about sovereignty or our allies. This man is an out of control dictator who doesn't think laws apply to him.

I'm what one would call an 'international social democrat' - in US terms, that places me on the far left of the political spectrum. That being said, I don't have a problem with this at all though I do think more could be done to insulate civilians from drone attacks. The fact is that the US, and many other countries, are being faced with a whole new kind of warfare that is becoming the dominant type of warfare in our modern age. No longer are wars fought between two states, rather they are now being fought between states and ever-changing, international organizations and other non-state actors. Sovereignty has always been a murky concept, and it's a value that shouldn't necessarily trump all others. These individuals who are actively targeting innocent civilians live in regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan which are nominally under the control of those states but which are, de facto, actually not. These are anarchic areas where the Taliban and other fundamentalist organizations exercise the real control. Pakistan won't cooperate enough in the elimination of these individuals partially because the state of Pakistan is divided, with several different factions controlling the different parts of government with very different goals, and partially because it simply doesn't have the capability of extending it's power into these areas. We either choose to allow these individuals to continue planning attacks on civilian targets, we invade Pakistan and risk nuclear war, or we continue to engage in semi-covert ops against them. Given these choices, the pragmatist in me believes the current course of action, while undeniably problematic, is probably best.
Additionally, as an international social democrat I believe all human beings, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, etc. have a set of fundamental rights. The Taliban and Al-Qaeda actively oppose this notion and where their power holds sway the rights of women, children and even men will be drastically weakened or obliterated. We have a moral obligation to ensure that those who would do such things are not able to do so. If that means assassinations in foreign countries, then so be it.

1. Who is hussien obama, do you mean the President?
2. i thought we were at war, you want us to get a warrant?
Appears you are more worried about the rights of Al Quieda than their victims
You didn't give a **** when Clinton sent cruise missiles in the Afghanistan you just complained that he didn't hit anyone.
If Bush had blown up have of East London to kill a terrorist you wouldn't have said a word.

If you honestly believe that the Pakistanis aren't giving tacit approval of these attacks, well then the naivete is on you. And even if they aren't, who gives a ****, I don't and didn't when Bush pursued the same policies. Sovereignty, be they allies or not is a wonderful think, but national security will always trump diplomatic formalities.
