The I'm getting mine mentality.
Short term success, leads to long term disaster.
They cannot think past their nose.
It is business, not personal.
Are you talking about the person at the company who made this remarkably stupid decision? If you are, I agree. By not allowing this guy to work flex hours when his wife was DYING, he or she probably ended up costing the company way more than the paltry costs that would have been incurred by taking care of a longterm employee.
Whoever it was that thought it was a good idea to fire this guy is a moron who can't think past his nose.

Too true! How much did it cost the bozo to train the fired guy's replacement?

You would need to ask the organization. The article doesn't really discuss any of the financials of the company... which makes most of this discussion speculative.
Let's see: I'm 4 months into 8 months of chemotherapy. Working my first job out of college that was barely keeping my head above water before half of my paycheck was going to medical bills. Still waiting for all this "charity" I keep hearing conservatives say is plentiful out there to help me eat and get my medication.
Trust me, if I had even a spare dollar instead of wracking up $50,000 in medical bills in 6 months with YEARS of intensive medical care to look forward to, I would help.
I hope you never have a child who gets cancer a few months after she graduates from college. I have had cancer for YEARS (doctors suspect my symptoms started when I was 19 - I was diagnosed a month after my 23rd birthday) and I was never able to get further testing because I did not have insurance until I got my first job. That's how I was diagnosed at Stage 4. We live in a developed country and my story and the story of this man's family should NOT be a thing that we allow to happen. But we do. Some, like you, allow it to happen with almost a sense of glee.
It is sad but here is the reality you can not depend on government and you can not depend on your business for healthcare. You as an individual have to realize you are going to DIE its that simple and the loved ones in your life are going to die and no insurance plan, business or government program is going to stand by your side. Do yourself a favor stop giving them MONEY and start saving it.
