Uncle Tom in the book was a very lowly and subservient character...I even remember him getting beaten by his white "Massa" yet he said he still loved his "Massa".
...Nothing wrong with that if your the "Massa" but it shows you have no self-respect.
Although on the flip side you could say hes "Loyal"...kinda like a battered wife that loves her husband.
Unfortunately, many in the Black community have extended the meaning of the term to encompass any Black man who strives to improve his life and the life of his family by participating in the mainstream American world.
I am just so tired of seeing any posts that has to do with race, what is the point in 2011 we should be over this stuff, it appears we are not. Hate to say it like this as long as we are all here legally yes i said it, we should embrace each other. Persosnally any one can call me anything, it was something that stuck with me growing up, that sticks and stones will break my bones, but names can't ever hurt me. True, they may hurt some, but i am a strong individual, making nothing bother me. I have been called a stupid daigo before, did not bother me, the more something bothers you, the more others will keep it up. I just smile, that pisses people off even more.
That guy Cliff on the tv show, played by Bill Cosby.
Surely they weren't acting African.
There was nothing Uncle Tom about the Cosby Show. The characters were well spoken and intelligent, but many episodes were centered around celebrating black culture and heritage.
As a black man who has lived around lower/middle income black folks his whole life, I wasn't aware this term was still relevant in our communities today. I've always been told to get an education and to go as far as I can in life. Not forgetting where and what you come from is what most black folks stress.
Anyone can call a black man an Uncle Tom and get away with it.
Try calling a black woman an "aunt jamima".
Same thing in theory, right?
Tell us you're not really that stupid...not just for making such a statement, but for trying to pass it off as truth, or even believing something that idiotic.
