In other words, the party which takes the constitution seriously?

Who's on the fringe?

There's no discrimination in running a small family business.

If I open a business, I would probably not hire black people, simply because of MY experience with them as employees.

This is the legacy of the Southern congressional barons on Capitol Hill, who blocked civil rights legislation from Reconstruction until 1957 (http://www.usdoj.gov/kidspage/crt/crtbegin.htm - broken link). Before that, Southerners successfully turned defeat in the Civil War into an occasion to erect Jim Crow laws. Before that, the South treasonously separated itself from the Union. Before that, the South successfully battled all attempts to end the practice of slavery (http://school.discovery.com/schooladventures/slavery/ - broken link), which the Founding Fathers well understood was incompatible with the principles of the American Revolution.

More reasons Blacks don't vote Republican.

Repeating the same mistakes with Latinos...will be the deathblow.

But you wouldn't TELL the black person you didn't hire "Hey man its cause your Black" you probably say "Others more qualified" or something to that effect.

I'm no fan of Republicans, but they didn't start out Southern. The two groups eventually bonded over a mutual fear of change.

I think you forgot to mention that it was the democrats that wouldn't vote for the Civil Rights Act.

Republicans saved the day.

True.

But if a racist southerner changes his hat from Red to Blue...hes not fooling anybody.

Which is why when people say "Republicans did this and that for blacks"...its really a half-truth.
