The indoctrination is complete in Maryland. What will these progs shove down the kids throats next? I'm glad I don't live in Maryland or I'd be moving.

"Maryland has become the first state in the country to require students to be "environmentally literate" in order to graduate from high school.

Today's vote by the Maryland board of education requires that students get a "comprehensive, multi-disciplinary environmental education" before receiving a diploma. Districts will have to develop plans for coursework that meets state standards in environmental literacy and have their plans approved by the state superintendent of schools. They will also have to develop ways to assess students' mastery of the material in order to determine if they are eligible for graduation.

The action today follows a decision by the board last summer to require that students get a bigger dose of environmental literacy than they had been getting in typical science classes. There was some confusion, however, about whether that action actually made environmental literacy a graduation requirement. Today's vote was intended to clear up that confusion and make the requirement official.

Stricter education standards sounds good to me.

Quote:
Under the new regulation, high school students will not need to take any additional courses, but environmental education will be integrated into existing courses, such as biology, the Sun explains. Every five years, school districts will have to report to the state on whether they have environmental subject matter in courses that every student must take.
Md. Stops Short of Making Environmental Ed. a Graduation Requirement - Curriculum Matters - Education Week

Basically, they're just adding appropriate material to the existing science curriculum.

Ok so whats the issue? They will know how to be a little bit more "green" and enviromentally friendly.
Whats the republicans/teabags argument? Their child is learning yet another topic? Really?
So what?

They are teaching them about being "green"...It's the kids choice rather they decide, to keep that "green knowledge" after they graduate....

So adding current, relevant scientific information to the high school curriculum would convince you to move out of state?

So teaching them to dump iron into the ocean and build a giant space shields to shade the earth is "appropriate material" in your eyes?? LOL. UN scientists think so.

Depends on what they say. I encourage parents to somehow find a way to record the instructors' lessons and determine if the information is objective or not.

I'm all for educating children on the environment since I believe we should be voluntarily doing much more to protect this earth. Unfortunately, it will be difficult to teach without introducing politics.

Also, High School education is a zero sum game. They are not learning more, they are just learning less of something else.

Is that really being added to the curriculum or is it just something you've pulled out of your rear to justify a silly thread?

How about making it an elective rather than a requirement? The crunchy granola clique can take the course together.

Teaching an environment based curriculum is a good thing, but our public schools cannot be trusted to do so objectively.

All the more reason to dismantle the government indoctrination centers.
