Have you ever heard of the seperation of church and state? Why is the state allowed to dabble in marriage? As a married person you sign a contract with the state and basically abide to agree with any changes made to that contract throughout it's lifetime be it taxes whatever the state decides to do. Also what about that contract. One side can decide to cancel the contract at any time without consent of the other.
If people want to sign a contract to with the state for property considerations or monetary sharing etc and live together then fine.
Iff people want to get “married,” they can go to the institutions that actually
care about marriage: churches, synagogues, temples, and so on. Marriage can and should be a private faith based recognition of ones relationship outside of government rule. The church etc can set their own requirements of what it means to participate in said marriage according to their faith. It is after all holy matrimony not government matrimony. Some feel the state has to run their lives though.
