Expecting meaningful discourse from this guy is like expecting a Sheltand pony to win the Kentucky Derby.

I started this thread in Great Debates. I don't know why it's now in PO.

You'll find plenty of conspiracies eminating from or made worse by the internet. THey tend to create boogeymen, the larger the better. So Big pharma, big oil, big govt all fit the bill.

Most people don't have enough knowledge to realize that all diseases and cancers are not the same. If leukemia is showing better prognosis, why isn't lung cancer? They don't realize that even within a certain cancer, there are different classifications of tumors that respond differently to the same medication.

Third reason is the cynical views of many that if money is going to research to find a cure, and there is no cure, then the money must have been wasted or stolen by some CEO of the charity.

Here is a good link from the national science foundation:

Hmmm!

No mention in it, that science is heavily politicized.

We haven't cured a disease since 1950... Wouldn't be cost effective... They've been sitting on the cure for AIDS since the 1990's...

If the pharmaceutical companies have been sitting on cures for this that and the other thing, then why hasn't anyone infiltrated the companies and extracted those cures, and cured people with them? I mean it can't be THAT hard to get a job as a secretary in one of the departments of Glaxo, or Pfizer, or even Dr. Reddy (manufacturer of generics). Surely someone on the planet has enough smarts, and incentive, and interest, in revealing these cures and exposing them to supplement companies worldwide so that they can be free! CURES WANT TO BE FREE! Free the cures!

Or hm..or is it just that people are frustrated because there is no cure, and need someone to blame, and the Rx companies are the most convenient target? "Oh yeah - my sister died because they SAY there's no cure, but there IS a cure and they just won't let anyone have it!"

Well, if you're going to participate in the thread, it would be nice if you substantiated your claims.

In the 90s, AIDS was a death sentence within 5-10 yrs. That's no longer the case. Do you think the virus has just decided to play nice, or that somebody is doing something about it?

If they had a magic cure to cancer, don't you think they would be able to charge any amount of money for it and be fabulously rich?

Personally I think the easier conspiracy to spot is supplements. Just put a few case studies from some hypochondriacs in a magazine or better yet AM talk radio infomercial, bypass FDA requirements that apply to medications including double blind studies and make some serious money from the desperate.

Think of all the money they would lose if they released pharmaceuticals that cured diseases. Instead they tend to treat the symptoms and keep patients on these medications for a life, sometimes until death...think about how expensive cancer treatments are. They are making a killing...no pun intended.

Yea, I definitely thinks that accounts for some of it. That, and as you note, a lack of common sense.
