Enter Wal-mart. Americans are used to cheap now. I really don't think (and especially given the economy) they are going to spend the extra money on the mom and pop stores. So as long as there is a Wal-mart in your town, or unless something is so niche, it really won't work at the local level either. We are being "chained" to death and I mean to say taken over by chains (aka corporations, etc).
And who willingly hands the power over to those chains?
Nations with long-term economic strength can also afford to support employment, education, and make health care widely available. Happiness viewed in this way means that people are more likely to feel better about themselves in Norway, which has almost no debt and great social services, than in Greece, which must slash entitlement spending or risk defaulting on its debt.
Gosh, this last statement sounds just like the US!
I edited my post to say - at least in this country. Yes, India is very happy right now with capitalism. But it does not work in this country anymore as those in power got too greedy. It's not going to work in the future. I wonder how many more jobs there are that will be outsourced.
Those in power are greedy. And your solution is to centralize more power into one entity (government).
And who willingly hands the power over to those chains?
Why "WE, the People" do.
If Walmart opened and didn't get the revenue it projected you can bet your last dollar that Walmart would close up shop and leave with the dust blowing in your face.
Why do places have a Starbucks on every other corner if they didn't get people buying from them ?
We are our own worst enemy. We hate the corporations as we walk through their doors to buy what's on sale.

Walmart? People who don't have much money to spend as they most likely had their job outsourced and might soon be on the street.
Chains in general? Again (and due to economies of scale), people who don't have much money to spend as they most likely had their job outsourced and might soon be on the street.

And we can blame that on a consumerist mentality wherein we value items we don't need over what we really do need. It's the American way. It is our culture. It is keeping up with the Joneses.

That's not the fault of the chains though. That's the fault of a government that makes outsourcing a better option for business. The only reason that chains are chains is because we give them enough money to become chains.

How will further empowering government solve this?
