Yes, let's not forget India where social security is provided by having enough male children to provide for you in old age. Female babies are considered an unfortunate burden and not infrequently killed. Millions of people are born, live and die in squalor. In America, DINKS avoided having children because it's "such a bother", and chose to indulge themselves with good living and all the toys. That's much of what's wrong with SS: there aren't enough young workers now to pay in to support it. You reap what you sow.
Lets cut and reduce the billions and billions of squandered foreign aid every year. Let also reduce spending on the numerous wars, regional conflicts, and police actions we are involved in.

Just do the right thing which is to start to make significant dent in the debt and start now----but please do not cause this govt to default and jeopardize the international community.
Raise the debt limit----than create a respected commission of dems and repubs to form a binding committee to come up with a workable solution to the debt problem. Give them power to have the findings implemented----I dont think a solution can be found under the current situation where idealogy and arrogance is more important than meeting our obligations and future challenges.
Just tap into the $2 Trillion Social Security trust fund the left-wing SS-apologists always refer to.
What ever money is in the fund would not be enough to pay for people over 50 retain social security benefits and also pay back all people under 50 what they have put into it. The money would have to come from somewhere else. I have no idea how much this would cost. Since no one is really looking into doing this, I don't think anyone has actually looked at the costs.
I am not saying I am against it per se, only that it is just not financially feasible.
Start now with new workers entering the workforce.
Pay everyone under 50 the amount that they paid in thus far, with interest.
In a few generations, we will be a more productive, responsible society.
Government will shrink in size and power.
We will become an even greater society.

The systems don't work because of meddling people who see the pot of gold and want it for their own (ie politicians)... I agree that they should be voluntary but at the same time NOBODY has tried to devise a system that works... and that is NO accident... Responsibility is nothing when options are NOT available... you can walk through a wall cause you need a door... If you take SS (which represents a door) you should replace it with another door, pretty logical right? What that other door is, well, again NOBODY wants to try to define it...
That other door is called individual choice. What made this country great was the fact that each individual had complete control over themselves and were not beholden to any lord, king, or ruler.
Give people their money back and tell them they are their own leaders, their own rulers, their own lords and that what they do with what they have is their choice be it good or bad.
If the government wants to help, then be an adviser, a promoter, an instructor for those who would pay heed. Past that, there is nothing the government can do aside from stripping people of their individual choice.

Seek charity, there is plenty of it and let the private society be their benefactors. You would be surprised how much people are willing to help. Why in fact, they have made entertainment shows that are profitable on this very aspect. Have faith in your fellow man, they are far more generous than you give them credit for; however it is difficult to expect generosity from those you are stripping clean on the pretense of doing good for others. Give people a chance, we will and do good when left to our own decisions.

Vets are under contract with the government and due to their sacrafices, it is not unreasonable to see them taken care of. Though they are not the problem and in fact, if you pay attention, it seems they get the short end of the stick more often than not when compared to non-vets milking the system.
