My husband had a guy come into the store where he works asking to buy a Qt. of oil with food stamps. If he can afford to have a car than he can afford to buy oil right?
No, not necessarily. Come on, now, Lubby. Look around. A lot of people are suffering.

The Food Stamp program helps low-income households by supplementing their monthly food budget.
You can be employed and still eligible for food stamps. So it could simply be that he desperately needs that car to keep whatever job he has. Public transportation might just cost him more than it does to keep the car on the road. Or maybe the car is a work vehicle. Now if it's a luxury car he's got, well, then I have a grudge. Sure, it's still technically legit, maybe he suddenly fell on hard times, but it burns my butt when I see that.
I think food stamps should be for food staples and nothing more...and all should be store-brand. Things like: Bread, Milk, Eggs, Pasta/Rice, Fruits/Vegetables, Canned Veggies, Peanut Butter, Baby Formula, and stuff like that. There's nothing I despise more than being behind some woman buying cart-loads of crap like Twinkies, frozen dinners, and potato chips, and then using that food stamp card to pay for the bill.
Maybe the govt could even consider mandating that recipients of food stamps attend classes on nutrition, cooking, and frugal supermarket shopping (you know, like the rest of us HAVE to do).

Where do you shop? Maybe it is me. I am not sure I have ever experienced this. I can understand some outrage over buying alcohol with the gov't cheese, maybe, I guess but how many times have you been stuck in line behind someone buying "cartloads of twinkles etc"?

I didn't take Frugal Shopping 101 or Healthy Cooking 2 in college, I don't know where you are getting your facts from.
