This is a spin off from the Allen West/Harriet Tubman thread.
I got curious, and wondered if anyone--specifically african americans here--could tell me why they tend to vote Democratic. I have my ideas about it, and White Republicans have their theories, (That Democrats keep blacks "enslaved" with govt. promises) but I'd like to hear directly from you guys on this, since I don't get to talk to many black people about politics in real life. What is it about Democrats that appeal to you--or what is it about Republicans that turn you off?

Well, I am not sure which you are talking about, most African Americans I know actually vote Republican... but of course most black Americans do vote Democrat. So I think they are voting against their best interest? Absolutely! My wife and I campaign in our old neighborhoods educating many people about the truths of the Democrat party, instead of them always going by what they have been told, and what they media still tries to tell them.
I interact with a lot of black people. I have been told by most of them that they perceive the Republican Party as racist. I don't think that most Republicans are racists -- with a hard "r" -- but I can see how they draw that conclusion. Rush Limbaugh calls a new oreo cookie an Obam-eo... seriously? Pray tell, what point was he trying to make with that?

The underclass, evidently comprising 47% on the government dole, do not want to give up their "right" to entitlements. Don't know the demographic breakdown. May be a reason to keep voting dim for all those convinced they are "oppressed" by those with independent means, i.e. "wealth".

Black Americans started moving away from "The Party of Lincoln" back during the FDR years the process was complete during Nixon's election when 95% of Blacks voted against him.
It appears the sentiment that the government is there to take care of you has a long tradition in the black community and against this backdrop it's easy to understand why an overwhelming number of Blacks support the Dems.

I've had numerous people (plenty of white people included) tell me Republicans were racist, but couldn't tell me why, except some regurgitated crap like "George Bush doesn't care about black people." But I think that's mostly it.
I sincerely hope that we can avoid any discussion of the supposed racism of Republicans/conservatives/Tea Party members in this thread.
I'm white but I truly believe the Democrats coddle the black population. This is not just in the form of welfare payments, although the disproportion with which blacks receive welfare is an issue, but Dems also push policies such as Affirmative Action and other social programs that are not related to welfare.
It is attitudes and beliefs such as these from the Right which prevents the many conservative Black Americans from voting for Republicans. Republicans, as a whole, tend to see Black Americans as separate and apart from real Americans.
Republican candidates, in general, tend to ignore Black voters and will not even actively campaign for Black votes. Republican candidates do not doorknock in predominantly Black neighborhoods, appear at Black churches or speak to the members of predominantly Black organizations (even the ones who are extremely conservative in nature) Therefore one must assume that Republicans believe that they do not need and/or want the Black vote.

No, it's not ok. I think a rich black person should probably vote Republican. I can see why someone like Herman Cain does so. I also think it would be good for black people if both parties competed for their votes. It's too bad the Republic Party isn't quite ready to give up pandering to the racists in a pinch.

Or people like you that because you want to believe this is the way it is, put blinders on to reality.
Democrats say that reform to welfare is a racist act.. so they believe that welfare is there for black people so.. who sees them as separate?
