The show was about public education ("Too Important to Fail").
Now, Mr. Smiley, I know that this was an emotional statement posed as a question to an educator. However, continuing to argue for public education with your case being made for dropouts and delinquents to be given 2nd and 3rd chances is a very weak case. And your grammar and sentence structure is just another case in point (".....we ain't never gone ketchup?" I know that you know better!!!)

It concerns me that anyone would take dropouts and then give them a salary to go to high school (FREE is not good enough for these individuals??!!). And it concerns me that you praise delinquency programs that "ensure that the boys graduate, enroll in community college, and ensure that the tuition is paid".

Wow, how perverse our society is becoming! If you are an offender, then we will make sure that you won't have to make your own way.

I know the old, tired utilitarian arguments will come out now.........."well, it's cheaper than housing them in prison..............!!!"

Not that I necessarily agree with Smiley's proposal, but it is cheaper.

Haven't you heard? Nothing that ever happens anywhere is anybody's fault.

It's this kind of logic that set us down this path in the first place. Begging to be extorted.

So, NOBODY is stopping these people from getting an education.

They make the choice not to participate in the people funded education system.

They make the choice to become criminals.

I don't see how there are only two options.

At least in prison, they cannot hurt innocent citizens.

I hate it when educated blacks try to "keep it real" by speaking ghetto English it really makes them look foolish.

I also disagree with Tavis these dropout and delinquent kids need to be kept away from the kids that want to learn.

Excuse my bleak mood but I agree with EdwardA - School is for learning and for kids that want to learn. It is not socialization, baby sitting or dating service. I prefer the thugs, bullies, muggers and distracting dumbasses be encouraged to drop out and let the teachers teach and learners learn.

But it was traditionally easier than actually DOING anything.
