Between 1980 and 2000, the percentage of Hispanics choosing "White" has dropped for "Some Other Race". But in the 2010 Census, the percentage has risen over 50.
What prompted over 50% of Hispanics to choose the White category in the recent census?
maybe they identify more with being white over something else.
I haven't read the thread but I'll go ahead an answer. Because being identified as 'white' has been synonymous with being identified with the dominate group and with the perks that go along with that. The Irish weren't considered 'white' for a while, then magically they were. Strange isn't it?
Because they can and they can have the best of both. In hispanic nations, "white" is seen as superior, preferred, advantaged. So they want to be white. However in the USA, "hispanic" is seen as needing of more government assistance, quotas, lower college admission standards, and of course no enforcement of our country's immigration laws.
Who wouldn't want to be socially advantage but also advantaged when it comes to hiring and all the assistance programs?
It's time the government drop the hispanic label, it's stupid.
Someone with some ancestor who spoke Spanish should not be seen as in more need of help than someone whose ancestor spoke Polish or some other language.
Out of curiosity, what benefits do you get for saying you're Hispanic?
Free money for college. Many scholarships and grants are given only to those who check off "hispanic" plus lower admission standards because "hispanic" is seen as a disadvantaged minority. Preference in hiring. It offers a distinct advantage when applying for loans.
I never checked off hispanic for my kids but the school has one down as a hispanic but it will provide him great advantages so why bother correcting that error?
