If he believed and did the same stuff he is doing now - he would not have gotten past the primary.

25-30 years ago Obama policies would have squarely placed him as a Republican. Today however, the Republican party in its current manifestation would consider Reagan too liberal. Heck, Nixon and Eisenhower would be to the far left of the current mainstream Democrats.

I have to agree with this. Remember how hated W Bush was by the left? Especially in his first term, they went around the bend over Bush. But he largely governed left of center. He almost doubled federal education spending, for example. Bush grew federal spending at the over twice the rate that Clinton did, even if you take out military & homeland security. Yet we conservatives despised Clinton.

True, Obama is basically a center/right republican.

Right. I would dislike Obama regardless of what "letter" he had behind his name. Why? He is an incompetent socialist. I disliked Bush as well because he was a liberal. I voted for him the first time, but did not vote for him the second time, as he was too liberal. Incidentally, Bush had an "R" behind his name, however, Kerry had a "C" for communist.

and today JFK would be considered too conservative to be a democrat, since the progressive liberals took over the democrats

I do not like President Obama's policies very well but he is far better than anything the Republicans are proposing. As other posters have said Obama is an old fashioned center right republican. That he is considered liberal is a measure of how far to the extreme right the crazies have dragged the country. We were once a fairly united country but Nixon's secret plan to win in 'nam broke us into pieces. We have become more isolated as we have been involved in unjustified war ever since.

The current Republican candidates are a joke. Why don’t they just run the President of the American Really Really Rich club and be done with faking our Republic.

What the uh...? Did you miss the whole point that the public discourse has moved way faaar to the right over the past 30 years. He would certainly be to the left of modern Democrats.

And the new meme that "Bush wasn't really a conservative." is hilarious. No, in the classical sense he wasn't a conservative. He was more of a a statist authoritarian, which is exactly what the modern conservative movement has become.
