"Pastor Maury Davis of Cornerstone Church in Madison told The Christian Post that he allowed the Sharia Awareness Action Network to rent the church for the event because the group will provide an educational experience and not simply an opportunity for “hate speech” as some have claimed."

"I don’t believe informative speech or educational speech is hate speech,” Davis said. “I want to know what is Sharia law, how did it come about, what does it mean and how is it implemented – just as a citizen and as a Christian, what is Sharia law?”

"Hutton Hotel backed out of its $8,000 contract to accommodate the event scheduled for Nov. 11, citing potential security issues and a risk to its employees."

Tennessee Church to Host Sharia Law Conference, Christian News

Disturbing that establishments feel so threatened that they are not free to host events such as this. The article says that after being canceled at the Hutton Hotel, they were turned down by 20 other establishments before being welcomed at this Church. Hopefully, the event will be informative and peaceful.

Good for the church and good for Pastor Davis. Keep an open mind, trust but verify, and research what you learn.

And count your crosses to make sure none disappear.

/fail

The First Amendment does not apply to private entities.

Nobody is accusing the government. It can apply regardless.

No, it can't. It's actually a legal term found in case law interpreting the First Amendment.

A single private entity isn't capable of "chilling speech." You can just move on down the road to find a more bigot and ignorance-friendly environment to spew your scaremongering nonsense.

This is an instance of the HOTEL exercising ITS free speech rights.

If the government required the hotel to host this thing, then THAT would be chilling speech.

Ah okay I wasn't aware that it was a legal term. Still somewhat of a chilling effect in the non-literal sense though if you ask me.

"Chilling effect" transcends legalistic technobabble.

If one group intimidates another group into shutting up and gets away with it, it will make anyone think twice before speaking out.

CAIR plays this like a fiddle.

That legalistic technobabble is what actually counts. Just because you do not comprehend it and how it works doesn't make it irrelevant.

Who cares what CAIR does, they also have free speech rights, as does the hotel - who exercised that right in denying their facilities to this group.

No law was broken here, just a private organization making a business decision that was well within their prerogative to make.

Much ado about nothing.

Well it didn't work - they just got another venue, and frankly, a more friendly one to their message.

FYI, this whole conspiracy theory about creeping Sharia is complete baloney. I find Sharia and Islam in general just as repugnant as anyone else with half a brain and an appreciation for Western values, but I also find the wholesale misrepresentation of facts and law by the scaremongers offensive too.
