"Pastor Maury Davis of Cornerstone Church in Madison told The Christian Post that he allowed the Sharia Awareness Action Network to rent the church for the event because the group will provide an educational experience and not simply an opportunity for “hate speech” as some have claimed."
"I don’t believe informative speech or educational speech is hate speech,” Davis said. “I want to know what is Sharia law, how did it come about, what does it mean and how is it implemented – just as a citizen and as a Christian, what is Sharia law?”
"Hutton Hotel backed out of its $8,000 contract to accommodate the event scheduled for Nov. 11, citing potential security issues and a risk to its employees."
Disturbing that establishments feel so threatened that they are not free to host events such as this. The article says that after being canceled at the Hutton Hotel, they were turned down by 20 other establishments before being welcomed at this Church. Hopefully, the event will be informative and peaceful.
Nobody is accusing the government. It can apply regardless.
No, it can't. It's actually a legal term found in case law interpreting the First Amendment.
A single private entity isn't capable of "chilling speech." You can just move on down the road to find a more bigot and ignorance-friendly environment to spew your scaremongering nonsense.
This is an instance of the HOTEL exercising ITS free speech rights.
If the government required the hotel to host this thing, then THAT would be chilling speech.

Ah okay I wasn't aware that it was a legal term. Still somewhat of a chilling effect in the non-literal sense though if you ask me.
Well it didn't work - they just got another venue, and frankly, a more friendly one to their message.
FYI, this whole conspiracy theory about creeping Sharia is complete baloney. I find Sharia and Islam in general just as repugnant as anyone else with half a brain and an appreciation for Western values, but I also find the wholesale misrepresentation of facts and law by the scaremongers offensive too.
