If you were a bank teller or a phone operator or a travel agent, you saw many in your profession replaced by ATMs and the internet
Really? Are you trying to say that ATM's, online banking and travelocity haven't cost job losses?

Seriously? Are you really saying that none of those things cost anyone a job?

Please admit to that so the forum can laugh at you.

Oh and

People have to develop, architect, and maintain the system, so not necessarily.

Yes.

Oh, and
Wait, let me get this straight: You don't believe that automation has resulted in job losses? WOW!

Please let me know the last time you used:
- A Travel Agent
- A Bank Teller to make simple withdrawal
- The operator to make a long distance call

Yup. WOW!

My ex-gf is a very successful one actually. She runs her own business doing group travel and special events, something travelocity, kayak, etc. can't really do for you.

Again, people developed those systems, and develops upgrades. People also maintain and operate call centers.

Again, who maintains the newly automated system?

The buggy whip maker? C'mon now, let's get serious about this BS.

I'm sure self-checkouts haven't caused any job losses either. Neither has Itunes which basically closing down record stores. Paying on line hasn't had anything to do with lower postal mail usage. Netflix and others didn't pretty much ended movie rental and so on and so forth. Obama pretty much stated the obvious but even that draw whines for the party of no. This is why Obama is always pushing congress to invest in our future with education and the like so people can transition into new careers but the party of no likes to pine for the 50s and act like nothings changed.

Finally, we agree on something.

It takes a lot fewer people to maintain than to do.

...and the cost to do things goes down for everyone, adjusted for monetary inflation of course. Your point?

Also, cite on your hypothesis?

Well for at least one major bank, a lot of non-American IT folks and programmers. And it's a fraction of the number of people it took to do it manually. (I know this because I train programmers for this particular bank)

But, of course, you knew that already. You're just digging in at this point and trying to defend the absurd.

It's time to fold'em and walk away. No reasonable person would agree that automation doesn't cost jobs.

Regarding traditional travel agencies-- there was a time when they handled all most 70% of airline bookings... Now 85% of bookings occur online. All automated. Travel agencies exist only for specialty, group and some corporate travel... but then again, you knew this too.
