(Reuters) - After 10 months of secret dialogue with Afghanistan's Taliban insurgents, senior U.S. officials say the talks have reached a critical juncture and they will soon know whether a breakthrough is possible, leading to peace talks whose ultimate goal is to end the Afghan war.
As part of the accelerating, high-stakes diplomacy, Reuters has learned, the United States is considering the transfer of an unspecified number of Taliban prisoners from the Guantanamo Bay military prison into Afghan government custody.
How about a rational discussion. No just bashing President Obama.

Those talks with the Taliban have been on and off since 2007 with nothing materializing. Perhaps now, they have lost enough of their leadership and supplies (and safe haven's in Pakistan) to finally decide that peace (for now) is their best chance of survival. I don't know.
This is the dumbest idea possible. Who in their right mind thinks that the Taliban will uphold their end of the deal? It is absurd to even suggest they would. They want their fighters back, then it will be business as usual.

Why are foreign troops in Afghanistan again? I forgot
To smash Al Qaeda and set the conditions for stability in the country. We accomplished the first goal, but we're still struggling with the second. It's a worthy and necessary mission. We can't leave before there is reasonable assurance that a non terrorist sponoring government can stand against the terrorist elements in the country. If we do leave before that, there will probably be more terrorist attacks against us in the future.

Obama bashing? No, but I'll say this instead.
As much as I disliked Ronald Reagan, I'll say one thing for the man. He didn't negotiate with terrorists. The Taliban, due to whom they chose to harbor and protect, by definition, are terrorists.
...but O was already doing that with Hamas, so this isn't even new.

You're right. It would be better to just go in and blow them all up instead!
That's the reason we are there. Do you have some alternative, more cynical reason? Cynicism passes as intelligence in certain circles, but in this case, it actually leads you off track. We attacked Afghanistan because terrorists from this part of the world attacked us. We continue to be in Afghanistan because we have not yet gotten to the place where if we left tomorrow, we know the terrorists wouldn't regain a stronghold there.
