America has always had enclaves and ghettos where people live just above third world standards, and a large number of homeless who probably doesn't see much difference beyond the weather. It is a consequence of having a wealth distribution similar to African nations like Gabon and Burkina Faso. The rich are richer, the poor poorer.

So...what you are saying is that countires like Norway, Sweden, Germany etc are the capitalist ones, and America socialist?

Countries doing well: Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Finland, Austria, Sweden, Denmark etc.

Countries not doing well. Spain, USA, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Ireland. Incidentally, the first list are the countries spending a lot on the welfare net are the first lot. Of the second lot, America spends the most.

Sources.

And you will need to make a better case if you are really trying to draw some kind of corollary.

Do you know how healthy the economies of Sweden and Germany are?

Guess that Marshall Plan is finally bearing fruit.

You can GTFO and move there if it's so great. You can give 75% of your income to the all-knowing, all-powerful, central bureaucracy to distribute as they see fit, and be the happiest, dependent, subway-riding, latte-sipping, unarmed peon subject of the central government in the world.

Us unsophisticated, jingoistic hicks here in 'murrrka will just have to make it without you, aimlessly wandering the corn fields kicking cow turds, mumbling something about keeping more of the product of our own labor and being self-reliant individuals, while the Swedes and Germans enjoy their booming economies.

Nevermind that those socialist asshats wouldn't enjoy that economy if us stupid 'murrrrkans didn't buy their crap. Same with the Chi-comms.

Common knowledge. And pretty fundamental stuff. Here is a graph:

Source: British Medical Journal

Those are all PPP, so they are a pretty good indication of how much each country actually purchases in welfare. America, incidentally, would be slightly to the left of Italy on this graph. You think those groupings are kind of suggestive.

You really didn't know this?

I just find it ironic that you are quoting a noted satirical comedian about the death of the american dream....when he came from a poor broken family and went on to live to be over 70 and was wildly successful.

Carlin himself would be laughing at the irony of you using him to try to make your point.

Liberals and the democrat party paradigm.

Cities and counties that are liberal have more poor, unemployed and people on public assistance.

The more conservative the government the more wealth the people have.

Simple as that.

I am afraid that may well be exactly how things work out. Unless people could get out of the refelxive "Rah, rah, rah we're number one" and acutally man up to fix the problems. And learn from what other nations do.

Sitting on ones ass and denying there is a problem with the kid when he is 15 years old, 250 pounds, diabetic and failing his classes doesn't actually make things any better. And it doesn't work for countries either.

Sometimes, you got man up and deal with the problem. Let denial be a river in Egypt.

Oh, and some of us did move there, and work there. More personal freedoms are a big draw. Better social mobility. And acceptably low taxes.

No.

Being poor in the US is not anything like being poor in a third-world country.
