Which is why someone who is really looking for news should not be reading The Blaze of Manufactured Indignation. If they're reading The Blaze, they're looking for an emotional jolt of hatred against their political "enemies" (to use Rush's word).
That deserves a rep point, but I got the dreaded, "You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Emeraldmaiden again."
The facts are that Chicano Park has 72 outdoor art murals and it is getting a facelift thanks to $1.6 million in federal money. What's not true is the spin that the murals are "featuring" Castro and Che. Perhaps they are in a mural there but it's particularly un-noteworthy.
According to KPBS:
In a nation that still has status of General Lee in public areas, I find the outrage misplaced.
great post. the murals have at least 1,000 plus images, we need to take care of our public art and this restoration was long past due.
hello? have you never had an art appreciation class? did you look at the work they restored? you are too young to be so jaded or do you just lack empathy to understand the expression ethnic art? a picture is worth a thousands words, these murals tell stories of culture and life. these murals are relevant to their community.
Why should the government (us) have to pay for it? Especially when it honors people like Che and Castro?!

You don't know much about history if you think neither Che nor Castro did any good.
Why don't you enlighten me.
You're so right, they can't hold a candle to freedom fighters.
Someone told me you were a veteran, so, if you are, how could you think like that? Those people have hurt and killed so many.
BTW why don't you go to Cuba, then get back to me on how much "good" Castro has done.

To perform needed restorations of publicly owned art.

It wasn't a question.
What was pointed out before, it doesn't honor Che and Castro. Maybe they're in a mural but that's the nature of art. In any case, they are not prominently featured in the 1,000 murals.
Why should the government pay for it? I think it's because they're government property.

person, I am glad you came back to your thread. go back to your link and LOOK at the murals, take a moment or two with each picture. you are flunking art appreciation and it's significance to the world. this is art that reflects history, life and culture. you are blind if for you, this about 3 or 4 images of Che or Castro out of thousands of images and stories.
we have public art do you not think it should be cared for? do you support the arts or not?
Don't you just love it when we honor people who did nothing good with their existence? And when tax dollars go to restoring the murals that honor them?
Did you even bother to read your own link?
"It’s important to note that no revolutionary icons are featured in the recently restored murals, and therefore it cannot be said that grant money was put towards restoring images of infamous revolutionaries."
Granted, this is a good example of why we have so much trouble getting spending under control (local governments want the money and Congress willingly sends home the "bacon,") but your statement that our tax money is being used to "honor" people who did "nothing good with their existence" falls flat.

Think California, has many people hungry and out of work. At this time, maybe, the community ought to think about having car washes, bake sales, what ever else they can think of to raise their own money.
Since I'm a tax payer, 1.6 million could do a lot right now for that state, then to spend it on paint.

of course we could always do something "different" with money earmarked for something. that is another thread all together. this was money earmarked to take care of public art if I am not mistaken. it can't be spent on anything else.
the murals were way past due for a face lift. should we let all public art go to ruin? a park with this many murals left in disrepair only reflects poorly on the community. we revitalize old down towns and spruce up parks. public art must be kept up. or do we only take care of the art we approve of?
car washes and bake sales will attract more people to the park now that it is cleaned up. no one likes to go to a place that looks unkempt.
