I'd love to hear this "forgotten history" about how the Republicans valiantly fought for minority rights in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
More republicans voted for civil rights then did democrats by a decent percentage, and nixon fully funded LBJ's great society programs which he easily could have put the breaks on if he wanted to.

Current enough for you.
So we have cases of modern-day black Americans being appointed into positions of power by a Republican.

Now, let's compare the record, D vs R, for elected officials in modern times, shall we?

While you're at it, who is trying to scuttle the Voting Rights Act, and who has voted against its renewal in the past?

Most of those "Democrats" and their supporters, switched to Republican after that. Most famous among them is Strom Thurmond. On the other hand many of the GOPers who supported it were in the Rockafeller Republican camp and were drummed out of the party by the time of Reagan.

There were still plenty of Dixiecrats in 1964, and the Republican Party was just beginning to formulate the southern strategy to capitalize on LBJ's backing of the Civil Rights Act. True. However, in the years immediately following this, the Republicans were quick to oppose racially progressive policies and to champion the "rights" of white racists in the South and elsewhere to keep themselves apart from and above their black neighbors. This timeline, compiled by the RNC, speaks volumes. Why no date from this time period? Could it be because in this period Republicans like George Allen were hanging Confederate flags and nooses in their offices and playing footsies with white racists?

By region

The original House version:

Southern Democrats: 7–87 (7%–93%)
Southern Republicans: 0–10 (0%–100%)

Northern Democrats: 145-9 (94%–6%)
Northern Republicans: 138-24 (85%–15%)

The Senate version:

Southern Democrats: 1–20 (5%–95%)
Southern Republicans: 0–1 (0%–100%)

Northern Democrats: 45-1 (98%–2%)
Northern Republicans: 27-5 (84%–16%)

Once you control for region the Republicans never exceeded the Democratic margin of yea votes. In fact when it came to Southern Republicans the voted 100% against the Civil Rights Act. Even amongst Southern Democrats a higher percentage voted for the Civil Rights Act than Republicans!

Arguing that the Republicans pursued racially discriminatory policies from the 1960s on is like arguing that the pope is Catholic. The evidence is so clear it's not even worth making the case. In some ways, the GOP is trying to backtrack on this because they realize the demographics of the country has switched, and the southern strategy is not sustainable in the long run. This is what GWB's cabinet appointments were about. Karl Rove is one of the most prominent Republican strategists who understands the Republicans have to integrate or cease to be viable.

However, old habits die hard. Republicans just can't help themselves when it comes to attacking latinos. Looks like the latinos will be voting Democrat for generations. Thanks, GOP. They also can't seem to stop themselves from making racist inneundos about the First Family -- attacking Michelle for being *gasp* black even more than Obama. Thanks again, GOP. Looks like black voters won't be switching allegiance any time soon.

ok this is funny... the parties have basically switched positions. the Democrats hold the positions the "Republicans" used to hold and vice versa with the Democrats.

this isn't anyone rewriting anything. just showing the changing nature of politics over time

Not just that they cannot even help themselves when it comes to attacking Asians. Have you had a chance to see Pete Hoekstra's ad.

Yep. It's crazy, isn't it? They're like frat boys who know they shouldn't make fun of the fat chick because it will make them look like jerks, but they just can't help themselves. The GOP is still the party of racists. Thank you, GOP, for taking them off of our hands. They were dragging us down since at least the 1840s. Now that you have them in your ranks, enjoy. We don't want them back. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
