Don't worry, I balance it out with EIB. That's how it works, right? A balanced diet consists of a crap sweet snack like a twinkie and a crap salty snack like doritoes, right?
Mine are life lessons. I'm a small biz owner and when a Democrat is in the house I pay more taxes. When a repub is in, I pay less. I am traditional and have those values of golden rule (stated above) and am PROUD of my country = therefore= Conservative...
Do you have the political/social views that you do out of convenience or because you really believe in the things the rest of the people in your party believe in or because you were just brought up that way?
We let ourselves become divided, mostly, because of our views but a lot people don't even know why they believe what they do.
Just some food for thought.
My parents were flaming libs. I moved away from home right after high school, and I was completely uninterested in politics until Clinton was elected. At that point I started paying attention to politics, and came to my own conclusions that I may not be a republican, but I sure as hell could never be a democrat. Maybe i came to these conclusions because I was out on my own and independent, and no one was filling my head full of their ideology.
I started reading newspapers and magazines, watching C-SPAN a lot and watched other live broadcasts, then I'd see how the printed and TV news media would distort and twist what I saw and read with my own eyes, and realized how biased they were against republicans, and how willingly they carried the water for democrat politicians.
I realized that to be a democrat, you could not claim to have morals, ethics, self respect, or a desire to be independent and self sufficient, at least with the republicans those characteristics were optional and maybe even desirable.

Good post.
I left the Democratic Party for good when Clinton was in office. His private behavior disgusted me. It also disgusts me how Democrats ignore, and thus excuse, this reprehensible flaw in his character.
