Feel free to move this thread if it doesn't belong in this forum...it's an unusual topic and i did'nt really know where it belongs.

Just a hypothetical question based on a hypothetical character that exhibits traits which might raise a strong reaction in some parts of the country.

The hypothetical man is a black, Ugandan immigrant who came to the United States 5 years ago and still speaks with a strong African accent and is sometimes difficult for Americans to understand.

His name is Mohammed Hussein and is of Muslim cultural background, and although he is proud of Islamic contributions to art and science, he considers himself firmly atheist.

He is homosexual, and is quite open about it...he displays feminine mannerisms and wears a rainbow pride bracelet on his forearm. His political views are socialist and anti-Israel. He often wears Che Guevera shirts and a button on his jacket that says "Free Palestine, boycott Israel".

Lastly, because of a disease that struck during his childhood, he is confined to a wheelchair and still displays facial scars, remnants of where boils once stood while he was afflicted with the childhood disease.

So, based on your knowledge of political and social additudes in your town/city, how would Mohammed fare in day-to-day life if he were to move to your community? What level of acceptance would he attain? What prejudices would he likely face and how would people react to him? I've heard of the handicapped, Muslims, Socialists, Atheists and Gays facing obsticles in some parts of America, but what if somebody was a part of all of those groups and was fairly open about it?

Also, please state what community you live in with your opinion of how Mohammed would be treated.

Sounds like several dozen people I know here...except for the gay part. In my experience, it is very rare to find an African or Muslim (or the combination of the two) who is "out and proud". Those two groups seem to be the most closeted bunch around.

In the DC area, he'd be looked upon as just another average joe. lol. Except for maybe the anti-Israel part. That's a tricky one, because it's a gray area with anti-Semitism.

Come on man.

You're talking about Mohammad Hussein, the very loud, flamboyant, ultra gay communist African atheist Muslim anti-semite who is covered in burns and also happens to be wheelchair bound.

I know you want to make it sound like your city is accepting of all people...but that mothertrucker is turning heads and getting gasps regardless of where you are.

Well, you have to remember that being the nation's capital, DC has rallies, marches, protests, prayers, demonstrations, etc., of every kind all the time. We're very used to seeing people of every persuasion here. So, it's hard to make people's heads turn unless you're threatening to bomb buildings, blow up trains, assassinate government officials and the like - which are nonos. Racists and neo-nazis aren't looked upon favorably either (and even that is qualified). Other than those categories, you're good to go in DC.

Those people are in every large city though. Again, read the description and imagine what this person would look like. People aren't going to look at or treat this dude like just your Average Joe.

I would never hire that guy because firing him would be really expensive.
