U.S. News - Racial divide: Minority students face more discipline, data reveals

Does anyone else think that this article is absurd? It doesn't state whether the "white" kids committed the same infractions. If that is the case and "white" kids get off with less punishment, then I could see the point of the article. Looking at the statistics, yes minorities are more likely are more likely to get in trouble. I personally do not think that has to do with the color of skin but an attitude or upbringing. The article also states that in one school, over 17% of minorities are enrolled in gifted and talented. Were these kids enrolled because of skin color? If so, they are doing an injustice to any other student at that school, gifted or not. This article breeds racial tension.

Yes anytime light is shed on how unfairly blacks are treated in institutions it makes certain people angry and tense. Obama being President also breeds racial tension from certain folk.

It's a good article and i agree with it however, a good amount of the reason white kids don't face nearly as much slack is due to backlash from parents and friends of the students. Blacks and Hispanics don't have those to speak for themselves when they mess up.

White people in particular are very vocal fight rigorously for what they believe it, if you suspend a white child, be prepared to have a good defense and to why you did it. Blacks and Hispanics you can suspend them and tell the money to f off and go about your business.

Why is that? Meaning minorities don't have parents and friends to speak up for them when they mess up. Could it possibly be because of "attitude" from family and friends? This "minority entitlement" attitude is going to be the death of America.

The whole point of the article (and all of these types of articles) is ratchet up feelings of guilt in white America - and hopefully transfer that guilt into either voting for Obama or not voting at all - in order to avoid the guilt in one's conscience of being a racist (or perceived as a racist) in one's own mind.

So they need to continue to pound and pound those theories into white America's heads.

From the article...

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan was careful to say that his department is "not alleging overt discrimination in some or all of these cases."

But he said he hoped the data would prompt soul-searching as educators across the nation confront inequities.

"In the big picture, this is really about self-analysis," Duncan said. He urged teachers and administrators to "look in the mirror, at the good, the bad and the ugly, and figure out what's going on."

According to The New York Times, Duncan said education was "the civil rights of our generation."

"The undeniable truth is that the everyday education experience for too many students of color violates the principle of equity at the heart of the American promise."

"soul-searching", "self-analysis", "look in the mirror" ...

This is not about dealing with activities of the children that got them into trouble. This is about changing the minds and hearts of everyone else. It's our fault that more minority kids get into trouble because we are racists. Never mind that the parental structure has been shot to hell and the kids have no accountability at home - it's our fault and we must change.

Is anyone really buying this crap?

When minority children are disciplined at school it is usually due to racism from the administrator not poor behavior from the student.
